Dog walking in the village

I'm thinking of getting a dog but am not sure what it will be like in the city, we're in the West Village off Christopher St. Any thoughts?

On Sundays you see lots of people walking their dogs in a special area of Washington Square. I'll try and get some video!

I knew someone with a great dane in a very small apartment. They said it was better than having a small dog in an apartment because the big dogs are more sedentary. If you are by christopher st there may be a dog run in the Hudson River Park?

West Village is a great place for a dog - you can take them walkign and running by the piers on the lovely remodeled West Side Highway parks...

@uptowngirl: I talked to one dog owner who said when he took his dog out, one of those cops who walks the beat, saw his dog pooping. The cop waited and when she saw the guy begin to walk away, she met up with the guy and handed him a ticket. He told me he won't do that again.

But overall, I think the signs are there just to scare people like a scarecrow is placed in a cornfield to scare birds away. it doesn't always work.

@Uptowngirl: I second that, at least based on the comments by JenMac.

I can't stand people who don't pick up after their dogs. Yes, doo-doo is gross, but that's why we politely pick it up and clean it up rather than leave it in the street for others to step in. And it's perfect sanity as long as one uses gloves/plastic and washes one's hands afterwards - just like using the people-loo!

I have to say, I find NYC a lot better in the doggie-doo department than many other cities. Compared to the very canine-friendly Paris, for instance, NYC is a nightmare

Yeah, I'm a little puzzled at what you mean, too, @ajadedidealist.

@hhusted I think it would be way to expensive for the city to install cameras on every street just to catch the dog-poo dodgers! We just have to live with the poo and learn how to dodge it.

@Uptowngirl: I know that. I was just making a general point stating cameras was one way to catch dog poopers. At least that was the only thought that came in my mind at the time. I believe what you say when you stated we just have to live with it. There will always be butt heads and a-holes in this city who do not respect others and only do what is convenient for themselves.

I'm sorry for my attitude people. But I am a true southerner. I was born in the south and raised there, at least part time. I have only lived in NYC for about 10 years, off and on. I just can't get used to the way of life in NYC. I love the country too much. I remember the old saying my mother used to say when I was a teenager. She told me, "You can take the kid out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the kid." Now I understand what she was referring to.

hhusted: do you live in Manhattan? It kinda seems like a lot of the places we talk about (restaurants, neighborhoods, etc) you haven't been to. I just wonder how you can get used to the NY way of life if you don't do much in Manhattan?
