How is everybody coping with the record heat wave?

Not too long ago we were all complaining about the grueling winter.
Now that NYC is experiencing its hottest summer since 1999 (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/07/nyregion/07heat.html), how is everyone coping? anyone used the cooling centers that have been set up in the city?

I for one have packed away all my jeans, I can't bear to wear denim in the summer ..cool ,cotton ensembles are the most I can bear.

@AJ New York is so freakin' hot I want to take my skin off sometimes. Especially as I'm walking down the street and end up in a non-shady patch of sidewalk. I swear the two minutes it takes me to unlock the door at work are murder because the door is in line of direct sunlight.

@AJ after the brutal winter,NYC seems to be in the grip of a sizzling summer..according to the weather forecast NYC should be in the 80s and 90s when you get there not as bad as the 100s but still hot and humid.

@Everybody: What is it with you guys. I love this heat. I walk outside and am just soaking it in. I rather have it hot like this than to have it cold. I am fair-skinned and can catch chills easily. This is why I hate it when the temps fall below 60 degrees. The hotter the better for me. This is why I love it when the temps hit 90 or above.

@AJ: If you hate sizzling summer temps, you will not like it in NYC right now. But then again, when I went out today to go to my doctor, there were a ton of people outside. I guess people feel the same way I do. Take advantage of it since winter is not too far away.

@uptowngirl But it does seem that the complaining is warranted. The heat really is extreme lately.

@uraniumfish, I'm with you. 103 degrees when there is so much humidity is not ok. It's equally as bad as 10 degrees. I was just saying the other day that it sucks living in New York sometimes because you're never not covered in some sort of liquid: sweat, rain, or snow. There isn't any escape!

I'm doing my best to eat right in this heat, since it lowers appetite. And not getting enough protein is a big reason why you start to feel lethargic. It seems like it might be caused by the heat, but sometimes it's just because of lack of power.

And of course, drink water constantly, but I guess that goes without saying.

I've become addicted to Nestea's peach flavored diet calorie free ice tea. I've bought four bottles for tonight alone! It's how I survive the heat. That and reminding myself that I'll get a nice golden tan!

I heard from accuweather that this summer heat is going to continue and get worst. In fact, sometime in the next two weeks, we should see the temps reach 110 degrees in some places. So look out.

@ajadedidealist how politically incorrect of you-the tan I mean!:) believe me I love having some color myself ,hate how pasty one becomes during the winters ..speaking of which if what hhusted says is true then many New Yorkers I think will be happy too see the back of this summer!

Yeah, I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm about ready to say so long to this summer too. It's not even enjoyable. What's weird is Cali is having record lows for the summer. Man, we are really doing a number on our planet.

@JenMac I still remember earlier this year when we were in the grips of the horrible winter some people were debating that global warming was a myth as the winter was so severe.Wonder what those folks have to say now and yes I dread to think what winter will be like when November -December rolls around.

@Uptowngirl: All this heat and strange weather is a direct result of solar flares and other storms in space. Don't believe me, check it out yourself - www.earthchangesmedia.com.

@uptowngirl. I'm really - REALLY pale. I don't tan at all. So the chance to get anything other than pasty is fine by me - especially considering I'm not usually the type to be a beach bum and sit outdoors.

@hhusted Hah! If you have to ask you'll never understand! I grew up basically barefoot on a beach and can never get enough of the gorgeousness of nature and the water.

I'm with you Uraniumfish! I would be at the beach every single day if I could. The sand on the feet, the sound, the breeze and floating on the water just past the waves. And body surfing!!!! The ocean is totally cathartic.

I used to think about the ocean constantly after I moved to New York, and it felt like an ache to not have that kind of beauty daily.

I'm not a huge fan of the beach per se, but I love being by the water or sea! Walking along the water, sitting near it, overlooking it, all great! But the beach itself I'm not a huge fan of. Probably because of my insanely sensitive skin; I find both sand and salty water to be abrasive and painful

@hhusted I too love the beach as i have stated before I dont usually swim in the sea because like ajadedidealist I have sensitive skin but I love taking walks on the beach. My most recent vacation was my own version of Eat, Pray, Love in Bali but unlike the protagonist, Elizabeth Gilbert I didn't go to visit any soothsayer or wizened old man , I just fell in love with the beauty of nature there .. the beach at Nusa Dua along which I took long walks, the tropical flora everywhere and the verdant rice paddies of Ubud.. if you get a chance you should go.. in fact Singaporeair is currently offering a vacation from NYC to Bali via Singapore for $1400 including airfare and hotel stay ..well worth it.

@Everybody: I see and understand. I am not crazy about anything on my feet that is grainy. In fact, I hate to feel anything on my feet. That's why I stay away from the beach. My girlfriend loves it because she can get next to the water. I do not like water and never did. I am not a water person. That is why I prefer the mountains. Maybe it's because I nearly drowned when 9 years old. I never got over that. And I was in a pool at the time. A wise guy kid in our neighborhood wanted to see me beg for my life so he stuck me under the water until I couldn't breathe. If it wasn't for the mother of the people who owned the pool, who came out to rescue me, I would have been dead in seconds.

Thanks for your responses.

I don't like grainy feelings either, @hhusted! I prefer pebble beaches, as long as the rocks aren't too sharp! I hate the feeling of sand on my wet skin. It's gross!

@Uraniumfish thank god I now have easy access to a pool here and the beaches of Hong Kong are actually within close reach too but nowadays I alternate between the gym and hiking up a verdant green hill near my apartment. Hong Kong actually is all slopes and hills I am hoping the uphill climbs will do me good.

Has anybody ever tried "swim-walking?" It's basically walking - just in a pool of water that's about shoulder-height. It's much harder than it sounds - and a great workout! Plus it's refreshingly cool....
