This city has become too much of a pressure cooker. Please are starting to explode.

@Everyone I also think the recession has a lot to do with it... life in this city is getting tougher.

I don't know - this doesn't seem like such an ordeal. They say that last year the city hit the record low for murders since they began keeping track in 1962. So if that number goes up, it looks like things are increasing when maybe last year was just a freakishly quiet murder year. Murders are still way down and this city is still a relatively safe one compared to many others.

@Uptowngirl: Any time you put people in a horrible situation, coupled with low or no income, you have a bad situation. And people are reacting to it.

@NeverSleeps You are right, but the news out of NYC is not very good is it? everyone seems to be talking about a double dip..

@neversleeps: I think that would be a great album title: Freakishly quiet murder year. If only I were in a band.

NYC is a safe place, I think - or would like to this. The media has a habit of sensationalizing news - as horrible as this is, it is a relatively isolated event. And considering how huge this city is, its relatively low crime levels are quite impressive...

@JenMac Ha! My friends and I are always coming up with awesome band names, as well. Too bad I can't play any instrument at all.

@ajadedidealist I agree.

I don't know what the city statistics are like, but it seems in the past month I've heard of a number of people getting new jobs. Maybe it's just my friends, but not everybody seems to be in such a terrible situation economically.

In the case of one friend, she used to work in finance but suddenly now has a creative job. It just seems some things are shifting, one industry shrinking while another grows.

@Uraniumfish You maybe right Crain's Business reckons Wall Street is shrinking

While a noodle factory in Brooklyn is raking in the moolah so as to speak, when the going gets tough everyone eats ramen apparently

@uptowngirl Seems like flexibility is important. My friend is obviously talented enough to land a creative job, though there are lots of people in finance who don't have that kind of range and can only work in finance.

The news always like to talk about the bad stuff. They rarely talk about anything good, although there are occasions when they will speak about something good. The job market is picking up. I get leads everyday and noticed more writing jobs are coming in more now than ever before.

@uptowngirl I actually really enjoy the occasional bowl of ramen. It's not something you want to dine exclusively on, though - it's not exactly filling and doesn't meet all of the dietary needs...

@everyone Isn't the news saying that the recession is over? I occasionally hear comments leaning in that direction.

@NeverSleeps Yes, apparently the recession is Officially Over. I think I saw an article just today about it but can't seem to find it now. Not an expert on these things, but I don't see the real estate market getting back to its usual hijinx just yet.

@Uraniumfish I just did a check on the real estate site trulia.com and sale prices are slowly inching up but they are no way near their 2007 highs. You have to see the ridiculous prices in Hong Kong though, a million US would buy you a small cubby hole here. Its shocking to see how affluent this city is.

My mom is in her late fifties and having loads of a hard time finding another job - people can be extraordinarily age-ist, especially in a youth-obsessed culture like New York City's.

@ajadedidealist You think people in finance would have learned their lesson, most of this mess was caused by brash, young bankers who were willing to take any amount of risk to make money. Its pathetic that experience, maturity and other such qualities are not valued here as they are in other countries around the world. What are people in their 50's supposed to do? shrivel up and die? or they are expected to have made millions so that they can retire at that age? its just ridiculous this obsession with youth

It doesn't seem like the recession is over - I'm not seeing any shocking changes or even very many small ones. When Gourmet magazine comes back on racks, then the recession is over. I just hate that the GOP is taking advantage of the sour economic times to blame the Democrats. Um, hello, how'd we get into this mess again?

Every President gets blamed for the lousy economic policies of his forbears. That's somehow a staple of American politics. It works in the opposite scenario too: during boom times it's the sitting president who gets credit even though he wasn't the one who had anything to do with instituting good policies. American voters have this weird amnesia that makes them incapable of understanding this simple long-term/ short-term logic.

I have been following a particular debate on the NY times which refers to unhappiness of the rich in the US over the expiring of the Bush tax cuts. Really makes for interesting reading , there is so much anger amongst the people nowadays here in the US and really we have made such as mess of the economy ..we only have to look towards the North to see how the Canadians do it- they have great public schools ,good health care and pay almost the same amount of taxes as we do.

Which goes to show, @uptowngirl - it's not "socialism" (which is not a dirty word!) but "good planning." A sensible budget is the key - not extremism in any direction!

Weird. Yet another friend of mine has a new, swank job. And last night, rather randomly, I was offered a job from an acquaintance. Not the highest paid ever, but respectable. I see a lot of economic effects of the recession around me, and yet there are these odd events that seem to go against the evidence. Don't know what to make of it.

Congratulations, @uraniumfish! What kind of job is it? Are you planning to take it? I wonder if the recession is actually helping freelancers. I only started working full-time about eighteen-months ago as a freelancer, so I can't really say, but certainly it's been more straightfoward than I imagined; perhaps because so many people aren't hiring in-house writers?

@ajadeidealist This would be a full time gig, so I'm hesitant. If the money were better I might jump at the chance, but it's only a "meh" salary. He said he could wait a month or two to hire someone so I may keep it in mind if things get tight.
