Pet New York City peeves

Okay, so we all reside in what has been described as the 'greatest city in the world' but in spite of all its wonderfulness there are certain aspects of New York City and its inhabitants that drive me crazy. Some of my favorite NYC peeves include:-

1. Pushy folk in the grocery line who will not allow you to even pay for your stuff before they plonk down their own and expect to be checked out at once.

2. Those folk in the subway who sit with their legs wide apart so as to have huge amounts of 'personal space' while you stand with your packages and glower.

3. Other folk on the subway who chew gum and then blow and burst gum bubbles with a loud 'thwat'( thought we left this kind of behavior behind when we were kids).

4. Those folk who insist on yakking on their cell phones in the middle of a snow storm while you are waiting patiently behind to board the bus or those folk who just have to gab on their cell phones while they block the aisles with their carts in perennially crowded and always busy Trader Joe's.

Of course this list is a work in progress but feel free to add to it with your favorite peeves as well...

The drugstore is another place I find that people are constantly trying to cut you in line. Especially when a new cashier opens up and it is rightfully your turn - whoever is behind you still feels an inexplicable sense of entitlement to be checked out first.

I would add to the list tourists who are unaware that the left side of the escalator is the fastlane.

Well, having somehow made peace with the "attitude" one gets, and having learned to give a little attitude in return, it's not people and their bad behavior that gets to me, its the potholes! And those famous ever-full drainage sinks at the curbs. You know, that give you icy wet-foot in every kind of rainy and slushy weather.

Medieval!

Well, when I walk down a sidewalk and get to a curb, especially after a snow or rainstorm, I anticipate floods, so I back off and go around it. The ground doesn't bother me as much as people and their ignorance does.

@uraniumfish I've stepped in plenty a puddle that was concealed by a topcoat of snowy ice.... I think the one thing I will never be schooled in is how to avoid hidden puddles. The only answer for me was a good pair of rain boots.

@uptowngirl I thought of this post as I was walking to the gym earlier and passed a dude peeing in a public phone booth. That sort of thing makes you think twice about touching anything in the public arena that is NYC - you never know who's peed on it. How annoying.

@ BroadwayBK Saw a public pee-er just yesterday. What's with these people? He looked perfectly sane and was well-dressed, so I couldn't even excuse it because he might be crazy or homeless or something. Good grief. Did they not attend kindergarten on the day we were all taught not to do that?

I'm working on a strategy of guilt and shame, with such people. Perhaps yell something out like "Hey, this guy's peeing in public!" to draw some attention to the offender? Since they missed that important day in kindergarten, perhaps it's our job now to socialize these people somehow. As a public service.

I'm quite sure I witnessed an act of fellatio on the subway last week. The guy was standing, holding his coat out to hide the woman sitting facing him - there was much giggling and ruffling going on. I was not amused.

Other pet peeve - people walking really slowly down 5th Avenue in the 50's - granted, it was Christmas-window-season, but there ought to be some general sense of foot traffic!

@BroadwayBK: We all know people are insane, at least a number of them. As for being overcharged, if the guy is the lease holder and you are sharing the apartment with him, then he has a legal right to do that. I'm not saying it is a moral right. I know I wouldn't do that. Brings back bad karma. Your best bet is to move into your own place so you pay the rent and have control over the apartment.

It's illegal for leaseholders to charge roommates more than a proportionate amount of the rent in a rent controlled apartment. You can sue and get up to three times what you've been overpaying. And you have to file your own complaint obviously.

Thanks BroadwayBK. That link went right into my main bookmarks, I'll be looking around at it frequently. That's GREAT!

@Uraniumfish People overcharging their roommates is probably one of my most hated things about this city, it happens so often and whenever I bring it up people say, 'Oh it's different if you're moving in with friends, but it's okay to charge strangers whatever you want.' Sorry Sanschez? I'm a bit confused - how has your quality of life been compromised. Glad to hear the rents are going down across the board, though - and I didn't know that about the roommate law. Hopefully this means life will be affordable in NYC soon - or at least more affordable.

@ajadedidealist I don't think the roommate law is something that is often enforced, as no one seems to know about it. And I'm guessing that in order to enforce it you'd have to drag your roommate to civil court.

I think the problem is that so many people post rooms on Craig's and many of the people who move into these rooms don't know how much the actual total rent is until after they've agreed to an inflated price.

Here's another one for the Peeve Chronicles. Have you ever noticed that whenever you are in a hurry to make an appointment and take the subway to save time, the train often comes to screeching halt underground as the conductor announces that he is sorry for the delay but the train is held up because of train traffic ahead as you stew away and lose precious time . For someone who is always rushing around despite my best intentions to be on time this is a source of major irritation.

@BroadwayBK and @Uptowngirl: I talked to an officer about cars turning into streets, while pedestrians are walking, and according to him, it is illegal for a car to turn when there are pedestrians on the street or stepping off the sidewalk to enter the street. The only problem is that there are no cops around to arrest the drivers that do it. So they get away with it.

The whole grocery store thing has me remembering this one time while working at one when I was checking out a customer and their food was all rung up. Just as I was about to hit the total button, this lady comes up and pushes her food right over the scanner and puts it on the list of the customer I am helping. There started this whole arguement and I had to have my manager come over to take the items off (they were soda as I recall). The guy I was helping was a friend of mine and he was so mad that this lady was trying to get him pay for some of her items. She claimed it was an accident. I am not supposed to really get into arguements but I knew that it as no accident. It's like when my mother and I go to the bank. When we just get there, we get someone behind us honking their horns for us to hurry when we haven''t even pulled out our cards yet. What's the rush? Good grief!
As for gum smacking, my husband hates that, too. But what gets him more is teens abbreviating everything. For instance, "O.M.G.W.T.H." Translated: OH, My Gosh. What The Heck!?" And people talking on their cells going 15 in a 40.

I notice most of my pet peeves when I'm on the subway. When you're waiting in a crowd you just notice things.

1. I'm always lucky enough to be near someone who SMELLS so horribly. I would say something if I wasn't afraid to open my mouth.

2. Really loud cell phone talking. Seems this one is pretty common. You don't need the whole car to hear you, m'am.

OH I just remembered.. the worst thing EVER.. Doesn't have to do with the subway, though.

I was driving uptown and the light was CLEARLY GREEN.. I mean.. the "no-crossing" light was flashing brighter than ever this day and someone on his cellphone decides to jaywalk RIGHT before I cross.. luckily I slammed on my breaks and stopped before I struck this noob. Get this.. he starts yelling at me like I was the one who just walked in the middle of the road! Some people! Yucck.

I wont describe them. They are so horrible. Other than that I prefer crosswalks. After all, I've been hit by a car while on my bike. Was knocked out with that one. Then when in WA I somehow lost my thoughts (literally, and I can't describe it). Found my self in the middle of the main road almost getting hit by a greyhound bus. Horrifying. I still remember a conversation I had with one of my friends in Mumbai a few years ago, she has two daughters and she mentioned that they are going on a ski trip. India being a tropical country , skiing is not a big winter sport there so I innocently asked if they were headed to Kashmir which is the only destination that receives snow and offers skiing India. Lo and behold, I was told that they were flying to Switzerland for skiing. I was quite gobsmacked and wondered how this mother who was so busy trying to keep up with the Joneses was going to afford to shell out for ski holidays to Switzerland every year if her girls got enthusiastic about the sport. It's not as if Switzerland is in India's backyard and is easily accessible, moreover its quite expensive to fly and ski there.
