The Apollo

Anyone been to the Apollo in Harlem? Seems like one of those experiences I've been meaning to have, but never got around to it. What's the best way to experience it, when to go, etc...anyone have recommendations?

My mother headed there on the Inauguration in 2008 - apparently it was an incredible experience. They televised the whole thing on giant screens and the atmosphere in the room - not unsurprisingly - was joyous and intense; a real "where were you when it happened?" experience. That said, the Apollo doesn't host an Inauguration party every day! I hear good things about their usual programming. They've a lot on this week for MLK-related stuff.

Thanks for your comments. I love the Apollo. I even wrote about it in a previous topic. It was very interesting, although no one left any comments. Here is the original post: http://www.streetadvisor.com/new_york/forums/home-of-rb-and-soul.

The Apollo is one great place to go if you love music.

I'd love to go on some wacky talent show night, if they have something like that, but I don't feel courageous enough to venture up there for an evening without some recommendation that it's worth the hike...

To me, the Apollo represents those who first got their start in the music business. As such it is not just a place for music, but it has history as well.
