If beaches are what you're looking for, then New Rochelle is an excellent choice! Parks are lined along the Long Island shores and beyond. On land there's Five Islands, which has a lovely beach and is a great place for kids to play; same for Hudson Park as well. You might not be surprised that, given Five Islands' name, there are lots of islands just off the Sound, and all are open to the public. David's Island is a must-see, as it has quite a bit of wildlife, and some are endangered and thus hard to find elsewhere. These are all great places to teach your child about the ecology of the surrounding area, as well as a first hiking or camping trip. Enjoy!
