Coney Island? Hm... I suppose it has a certain charm. My favorite NYC-accessible summer destinations are New England ($15 each way with Bolt Bus to get to Boston) or the Berkshires (absolutely gorgeous any time of year.) Or Martha's Vineyard!

A group of us were supposed to have gotten together this summer and go to Coney Island as a group. But as yet, that has not happened.

Hasn't it always been the ultimate summer destination?

I feel like it's the ultimate summer destination for vagrants . . .

@JenMac: That's what my girlfriend said when she went down there to do a gig a few weeks ago. Nothing but vagrants and other low-lifes there. Not a pleasant place to be.

@JenMac Ha!

@everyone I think summer is the best time to get out of the city for a day or two. I thought this was a cool summer getaway feature in TimeOut a few weeks back: http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/travel/87420/101-summer-getaways-summer-travel

I especially want to get to that romantic inn with the claw-foot bathtubs in Canandaigua.

I think Coney Island was more of a ultimate summer destination in the days before mass transit and automobiles for everyman. I think I'll take my chances on Long Island.

I agree, @BroadwayBK.

I've actually never been to Coney Island, although I've lived for 10 years in NYC. Perhaps I should go when I next return to visit my grandma! Unfortunately I tend to only be in NYC in the winters...which rather complicates matters...
