MUSEUMS IN NY

I would love to visit some museums when I go to New York later this year. What is your favorite museum?

Most people will say the Met or MOMA but I like the Rubin Museum of Art which exhibits art of the Himalayan region.

I really love PS 1 in Queens for contemporary art. The MOMA has a great permanent collection, but I've started to feel that I've seen it too many times...

The Met. Cliche, but true. I just love wandering through the eclectic, rich collections....it's one of my favorite places in the world.

I'll agree on the Met being a really special museum. But, I also rather adore the Frick and the New Museum (on Bowery). I saw an Elizabeth Peyton exhibit at the New last year and it was a two floor spectacle. It doesn't seem like any other museums can dedicate that much space to such a new artist. It was really cool.
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is really incredible too. The tour is required to see on of the places but I've been to three different ones and it never ceases to amaze me.

Def the Met. Student discount gets you in free and there's so much to see. For the sciencey side of me, you can't beat the natural history museum. I also really like the coisters more for their setting than anything.

The Met is the only museum I actually frequent. Have been to lots of other ones, but the Met keeps me coming back... I could stay in there for hours.

The Met for me too, for exactly the same reason as everyone else. You can get lost there and forget all about the outside world.

I never had any love for the MOMA for some reason.

I don't like the MOMA either. It's boring to me.

I agree about the MOMA, but have to stick up for their amazing film program. I used to have a student membership card, super cheap for like $25 and could go into any ole film screening I wanted for free, any ole day of the year. Since they have a very great film collection and screen a good handful of films each day, that's an excellent deal. I used to haunt the place whenever I had a free afternoon and didn't know what to do with myself.

I think NYC has one of the best museum-cultures in the world - with the exception of Vienna, which is unparalleled. I also love the Neue Gallery - 19th and 20th C Austrian and German art - it's a hidden treasure on 5th Avenue. The Bodies exhibit freaks me out a little bit though

@ Benthedude: don't forget the Tenement Museum! I'd say it's #2 after the Met. It is just so cool. Whenever I have people in town, I take them there and they really enjoy it. Plus, the gift shop is a cool place to buy gifts that are all NY and you can't get them at any other museum.

@JenMac I second your vote for the Tenement Museum for it gives you a fab insight into NYC's immigrant past.

I love the Tenement Museum! I went there on a school trip when I was little and still remember the place vividly. Highly recommended, I'd say - and kid-friendly to boot.

I really like MOMA, but i'm also really into modern art. If you're a fan of modern art I would definitely recommend it. The only criticism I have is that they don't have enough art from the 90's and on. However, I heard they are working to change that. If you are into contemporary art and would rather not pay to go to a museum, try to go through the galleries in Chelsae. Chelsae has dozens of really good galleries that don't cost any money.

@Uptowngirl: I go by there every Monday night and never saw the place. It must be inside a building. Next time I go to my screenwriting class, I'll see if I can find it.
