Do you eat out every night or order in or cook?

New York City has more than 13000 restaurants and its often been said that the city's inhabitants enjoy patronizing these restaurants or ordering in rather than slaving away to create a home cooked meal. Personally I enjoy going out once or twice a week and on other nights I like to cook and eat in. What do you all do? I in fact recently came across an excellent blog written by Cathy Erway called Not eating out in New York City where she posts recipes along with the cost calculation and health benefits of each of her recipes-http://noteatingoutinny.com/

I mostly don't eat out, but when I do it's for foods that are complicated to make or wouldn't normally have the patience to make myself.

I wish I had the time to cook! I tend to eat out for lunch, then get something like yogurt/fruit/bread for dinner, or get takeout for both meals. I'm lucky in that I live near Hunter College HIgh School and Mount Sinai - both of which have an attendant set of takeout places (Salata, Champignon, Yura's, Petak's, Bagels on Madison, etc) catering to the lunch crowd...prices are pretty good, especially compared with the exorbitant grocery markup - I'm convinced that I pay 100x what everyone else in NYC pays for my groceries - my grocer doesn't ever use price tags, and I think the prices changes every time I go in depending on how much of a "discount" he decides to give me..

@uptowngirl Thanks for the blog recommend. Looks like another good one.

I tend to eat out 2-4 times a week. I love cooking but I often work really loooong hours and don't always feel like doing it. I'm not one of those people who claims "not to have time" to cook, though - I find all of those make-it-really-quick recipes really annoying and sort of lacking. And so American.

Ah, and I also sometimes pick up ready-made things at the (organic) grocery store. Little salads or burritos - things like that.
