Its far from the city and i would not recommend walking around at night around there as a tourist. My husband is a cop and the precinct that covers the area is actually one of the worst in Queens. The train ride into the city, just reaching the city, is going to take at LEAST 30 minutes. That is if you are not stuck in train traffic. I would recommend maybe LIC/Astoria Queens, if you are looking to stay in queens. if you look for hotels near 21st street Queensbridge, on the F line, you will be just 2 stops from the city. There are many hotels in that area that are a bit more wallet friendly. The price of hotels in the city are ridiculous .Also, see if you can take advantage of free ferry rides, the one going to governors island is free and you get a fantastic view of the Statue of Liberty, plus there are many activities to do there. Museums fees (Natural History and The Met) are recommendations, you can donate whatever you like. Enjoy your trip!
