Culver City isn't that big so pretty much wherever you live you will be close to nightlife. As to what is safe and unsafe it is about relative in Culver City--which means you should be okay so long as you don't wander around in the middle of the night by yourself or just loiter around somewhere waiting to be mugged.

As far as nightlife goes, most of the bars and loungers are by the freeways. For example, you can find the Alibi Room on West Washington near the 10 and the Scarlet Lady Saloon near the 405. So on the west and north of Culver City.
