"Nothing exciting but the apartments are nice"

East 56th is a high luxury street but there isn't anything on it but luxury buildings. There aren't any restaurants or bars or shopping. And, there is a lot of traffic (car and pedestrian). It's a pretty sterile street with a lot of noise. So, I don't get the appeal of living in one of these buildings if you have to cab just to go to the deli. I'd pass but the high end people seem to love living on this street.
The corner of 56th and 5th is the famous Trump Tower. It has a bizarre shape supposdly so that it can provide as many "corner" apartments as possible. Tons of celebrities and people just famous for being rich live in this building. It's one of the more expensive apartment buildings in the city. The corner of 56th and Park marks the site of another famous luxury building: The Drake Hotel. Unfortunately, it was demolished like 20 years ago which is one of the many New York Historical tragedies. And, I guess, this street has plenty of luxury buildings on it, so they figured they could do with the loss of the Drake. Most of the buildings on this street are luxury buildings. I wouldn't really want to live here, though. If I had that kind of money and didn't, for some reason, live in the West Village, I feel like further uptown would be much more desirable. 56th doesn't really have a neighborhood feel to it.
West 56th has all kinds of cool things on it; but, East is just a little lackluster. This just not really anything to do and for all that money you would be paying to live on the street, I would prefer to have at least a local watering hole.
Pros
  • Luxury apartments
Cons
  • Dead at night
  • No good bars
