Hi SummerM,

I am looking into a home in a private street in port richmond (behind the AutoZone). Can you offer advice if this is a safe area to raise a family? Is the area getting better in terms of crime/schools? Would you move here or stay here?

The crime rate on Staten Island is lower than the other boroughs but there are still some areas to avoid. Stay away from park hill, jersey street, arlington, and some parts of west brighton. Some people would say to stay away from mariners harbor which is where I live. I lived here for half of my life and have never seen or experienced any serious crime in my area. The other side of mariners harbor that borders arlington should be avoided though. Overall, the schools here are the best of the 5 boroughs. There are major supermarkets all over the island. There are pathmark, shoprite, trader joes and several others. There are 2 targets and the bj's is under construction. We have a costco here as well. There will be a new outlet mall coming soon and a ferris wheel by the ferry, the mall and other shopping centers are getting an upgrade and new public transportation options will be available. Staten Island is definitely on the rise.
