Here's a little background about state test scores: There are 4 levels for grades 3-8. In a nutshell- Level 4- above grade level Level 3- at grade level Level 2- approaching grade level and Level 1- below grade level. In Pawling, depending on the grade, between 2 and 6 percent of the students are at Level 1. When compared to statewide, students in grades 6 and 7 fell below the state median, but only slightly. In grades 3, 5 and 8 students were above the median and exactly at the median in grade 4. At the high school level, Geometry and Math B scores were at 95 and 96 respectively, putting them slightly below the median of 100. Overall, these are excellent results. I think the slight decline in grades 6 and 7 is sort of typical of the "middle school slump" as well as the fact that the exams became more challenging after 2009.
