In the 1820s, the postmaster, Henry Romer, was directed by the federal government to name the town. It was originally called Clark's Corners, after an early settler, and Romer wanted to the permanent name to be "Clarksville." This was nixed because there was already a Clarksville in the town, so he gave his second choice, Pleasantville.

That charming town's name must have caught the attention of Hollywood! First with a 1950's sitcom called "Pleasantville" and then the 1998 movie by the same name starring Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon and "Malcolm in the Middle's Mom": Jane Kaczmarek as what else - the Mom!

Hello Anjanette,
In addition to a cheerful name the Village of Pleasantville has a Train to NYC and the Jacob Burns Film Center.
