Is Playland going to close?

Playland is unlikely to close. It is a national landmark, and one of the oldest planned amusement parks in America! It is a major amusement destination for New York City dwellers in the summer.

From what I have heard, there are plans to re-use some part of Playland. The county's budget deficit has prompted a revisiting of the old topic of whether Playland should be shut down. However, given the Historic Landmark status of this 83-year old amusement park, it seems safe to say that there will be some version of Playland that will continue. The county is said to be examining short-listed proposals for a renewal of the Playland concept and I have not read anything about a permanent closure.
