Delancey St South
"Pretty Much Empty"
There isn't much here under the Williamsburgh Bridge, though it is safer than it used to be. Parking spaces, cop cars, and cheap deli's are nearby. Access to the bridge (by bike or foot), the East River Park, or the rest of Delancey Street and the joys of the West are all easy to come upon. Watch out for crazy bikers coming off the bridge at high speeds. Wouldn't recommend it for living, unless you're looking for protection from the elements. Nice New York vibe though.
East 86 St
"Maybe not for living, but definitely for visiting."
86th St. Keeps growing!! New high rises, new stores, new subway lines. Expect things to keep getting better. From park to park (Schurz to the East, Central to the West) 86th st. is a worthy stop for anyone looking for some food, some shopping, and some people watching. It will be noisy, and it won't give you the relaxed neighborhood feel of a Greenwich Village, but it does what it does well - and that is to be a place to stop by with it's numerous transportation options, and get stuff done. Thompson St
"Runs Through SoHo"
You'll find some jumbo rats walking these streets past midnight, but during the daylight you'll find top-rated restaurants, unique clothes and jewelry shops, and quaint cafes. The street has a charm that shines through whether its sunny or snowing, and it's proximity to parks, subways, major shopping centers, and the holland tunnel makes it a great place to either live by or get away to. Check out the Thompson Hotel, with rooftop bar A60. A great place to wind down on summer nights with great views and fancy cocktails.
West 40 St
"Just south of Disney Town"
Yeah yeah, Times Square is nothing like it used to be. It's a Disney-fied version of itself. but it's still a place unlike any other... and 40th (which just escapes it to the South) hosts some good places to check out. For any actors, playwrights, or play lovers - The Drama Book Shop between 7th and 8th Ave's is a must see. Full of more literature than you could ever find after a lifetime building a collection, it's a great place to shop, read, or hangout and hear some live music. You'll find Port Authority near by, great $1 slices towards 9th Avenue, but the DBS is the real gem.
East 157th St
"Home of the WORLD CHAMPIONS!"
What can I say? Yankee Stadium is the best ballpark you'll ever enter, so take your time and enjoy the sights. Though the new stadium doesn't have the history of the old, you'll still find some old stand-bys like Monument Park and Sabrett's hot dogs. Add to that a plethora of new foods: sushi, pulled pork, nachos, pizza - plenty of beer - and a team that is in a league of it's own and you have a heck of a place to spend an afternoon.
Van Dam St
"Food. Mayhem."
Be careful, to us locals this is sometimes referred to as the "Boulevard of Death." Not that anything really bad happens on it, but crossing it is sometimes a mission. Regardless you'll find a world of different peoples, foods, colors, and musical tastes. Try them all. Check out Mi Tio's Steakhouse down towards 60th St. and QB - The biggest and baddest steak you will ever have in your life for under $25. Guaranteed.
East 74 St

"Quiet and Green"
What starts at the park, ends at the river. Not much is really happening along this street, but you can guarantee that you'll have some quiet moments if you want them. You'll find nice places to eat and drink the further east you go (though there isn't much past 1st ave) and people are as friendly as you'll find in NYC. Check out Banshee Pub just off 74th on 1st Ave - a great spot with warm bartenders, and cold beers.
