Pitt St
"not much to find"
There's several small establishments and the police precinct here. There are also several tenement houses and teenagers/young adults looking for things to do (mostly during the nighttime). I personally haven't spent much time here other than to walk to East Broadway. You can easily access the rest of the Lower East Side as well.
West 14 St
"semi-artsy, trendy"
Another shopping area in Manhattan, but 14th street is less crowded and boasts an ability to sell handmade products as well as the commonplace Forever 21 and Wet Seal. Union Square is a popular hang out spot during sunny days, and there are often rallies and celebrations held in the square. The street is easily navigable.
West 33 St
"not 34th street"
Just a block over from W 34th street, 33rd street is a bit quieter than the shopping center, but also a little grimier. There are a few places to shop but there are also wandering homeless. I wouldn't say there are much more than you would find in certain areas of Manhattan, though.
West 34th St
"fast-paced shopping"
I love this place. The shopping extends from 5th avenue until 8th avenue, and boasts both cheaper stores as well as more expensive ones, from Conway, Strawberry, Forever 21 and H&M, the in-between like Victoria's Secret, Nine West and Aldo, and a bit more expensive at Bebe and Zara. There's a big movie theater between 8th and 9th avenues. It tends to be crowded like most shopping areas in Manhattan and the downside is that there are few places to sit. Eatery is not high-end either but it serves its purpose.
Avenue A
"a is for alphabet"
Avenue A begins Alphabet City and offers an array of restaurants/cafes/shops to choose from. There is activity throughout the day and its hard to turn your cheek once you get there. You will likely muse over vintage shops while watching bikers wheel by.
St Marks Pl
"youth & fun"
I hang out around Saint Marks when I just want a laid back time with friends. There's a lot of small eatery, tattoo and piercing parlors, and street vendors. It tends to have a more youthful vibe but you will find people of all ages walking around.
West 42nd St

"lots to see and do"
You will never run out of things to see (like Broadway productions) or do (there's lots of shopping and eatery in the area) when you go to 42nd street. It's especially fun when visiting in groups, and there are often a lot of tourists. It's often lively and loud - which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the atmosphere you are looking for. My best advice is to bring some cash with you when you go.
