What are the best places in bk and queens to live? (On a budget )

Moving out of Manhattan with my husband and dog in search of more space

we are looking for a place in bk or queens / our budget is 2k max. I've lived in nyc for 7 years and feel like I know more about living on the moon than the neighborhoods outside Manhattan.

What are the best places to live that are safe, affordable and not too far from the island.
I've heard bushwich is up and coming but is it safe?
