East 1st St, Lower East Side

1st street is a tiny wisp of the street in the East village that doesn't have a ton on it, but it is close to everything that is great about the East Village. Much of the old Bowery has been transformed and the buildings are all sleek and new. So, there isn't much history. But, there is still the cool factor to this area.

1st St starts at Bowery. I lived right here when I first moved to the city. It's a pretty cool street and you're surrounded by anything you could possibly want to do. The very famous Mars Bar is right here and it is pretty unreal. It's one of the remaining establishments from the glory days of the Bowery -- i.e. when it was more of a giant crack den than an actual neighborhood. That place is scary during the day -- but, if you dare, it is pretty interesting. I love that it's next door to an insanely expensive luxury apartment building. A little way east is a little restaurant called Prune that is outstanding for brunch. It's got an eclectic crowd and great food. And, there's a tiny park right at the corner that has a Veselka stand! Veselka is a great Ukrainian restaurant and they have a smaller version of their menu for some al fresco peirogi eating.

The East Village is the heartbeat of New York. The East River Park always has special events and is teeming with people during the holidays. This area is definitely not for the one seeking solace. For those interested, there is a Marble Cemetary close by; this is known as the oldest cemetary in New York City. If you walk far enough, you can view the Williamsburg Bridge. Katz's Deli sells the best Pastrami sandwiches - located just off of East 1st. There is definitely not a shortage of restaurants and shopping to do on East 1st. I also purchased some pickles that were to die for at a little shop along East 1st that also sells all types of cheeses and Grecian foods.

The East Village always reminds me of a generation past, even if young people continue to hang out here. 1st Street is definitely a part of that vibe – the neighborhood offers the standard karaoke bars and coffee houses. In general, it’s an interesting street to walk down if you’re just looking to be entertained by a stroll – the commodities on the street are pretty diverse.

If you are looking for great karaoke, this street is the place for you. On first street and second ave, and on first street and first ave sit two of the greatest and most fun karaoke bars in the East Village, and perhaps in the city. Second on Second and First on First offer an inexpensive bar, an extensive song library and a whole lot of fun all around. Second on Second offers private rooms, a nice atmosphere and a night of all around fun. This street is full of youth and is always very lively. There is no boredom here, and it feels as though people here are never tired of smiling. There's a little of everything for everyone here. For the East Village, it's also not too far from train stations on Houston st and 2nd ave and a newly open Whole Foods Market nearby offers great convenient shopping as well.
