"Seems Far From The Action...but it Ain't !!"

Have lived in FH 20 years. It is considered the "far end" of Brooklyn, but is in fact extremely accessible to Manhattan and the rest of NYC...just add about 15-20 min travel time. The R-Train at 95th Street is the last (or First) stop, so you always get a seat for your commute (and you can nap on the way home), and it connects to every other line, or stops right near wherever you might want to go (check a NYC subway map). FH is right at the entrance to NY Bay and the ocean, so it is always a little cooler, and the air much fresher than most of NYC. It is a quiet and generally safe area. The usual urban precautions apply, but in moderation. Many good restaurants and Bars. Many local groceries. Great shopping areas nearby. The general population is ageing (like me) and there are many many medical facilities and doctor/dentist/specialist offices everywhere, likely within a block or so. It is getting pricey and expensive, but no wonder there. The area was traditionally Irish/Italian/scandanavian but is now nicely diverse and without tensions. There are large vibrant Arabic and Chinese neighborhoods closely adjacent (more good restaurants and shopping), and the overflow from these are filtering into FH...which only adds to the diversity and attractiveness of the area. Parking is extremely tight. A lot of commuters drive over the bridge from NJ or Staten Island and park for the day causing congestion and frustration. If you have a car, be prepared. If not, you don't really need one. The R is there and also plenty of bus routes. Lots of Shopping and Dining and Entertainment, but not much Culture. You will have to travel inward a bit for that. If you want to Enjoy NYC, but not really be In NYC, this is a good place for you.
  • Shopping, Dining, Accessability to NYC, cooler and quieter than the norm.
  • Parking is abysmal, unless you have a driveway/garage like me.

"Fort Hamilton - An Extension of Bay Ridge"

Fort Hamilton is often considered part of Bay Ridge. It is accessible by the R Line at: Bay Ridge Avenue, 77th Street, 86th Street and Bay Ridge – 95th Street.

The bike path from the pier at Bary Ridge Ave to Bay Parkway is a local favorite for Sunsets and views of the Verrazano Bridge and Downtown. Shore Park offers a plethora of outdoor activities including baseball, dog runs and tennis.
