Foster Dogs in NYC

Thought this program might be interesting for the animal lovers among us - I'm not sure if there is a difference between fostering a dog and actually adopting it, though. Maybe someone can clear this up? Do people adopt the dogs after someone takes them into their homes for foster care?

@NeverSleeps The blog seems to be advertising dog adoption services..maybe you can volunteer at the shelter and thus foster them and then help to find them a new home?Coincidentally I happened to meet a woman in my neighborhood yesterday who had adopted a tiny Chihuahua -mix from a shelter..the dog was unusual looking but adorable all the same ..I wish I could have a dog but I just don't have the space in my apartment.

@Neversleeps: when you foster a dog, you kind of adopt it temporarily. I think it's a way to get the dogs out of the shelter while waiting for an owner. That way, they can socialize and function when they are adopted so they're not brought back.

@uptowngirl Me too! I actually wonder how anyone has room in their apartments to share with a dog.

@JenMac That's what I thought. And I suppose it is a good way to do things, but as the foster parent does it then fall on you to find the dog a home? I mean, how else would the dog ever leave?

@neversleeps: nope, I think you have the dog for a set number of weeks. But, maybe you do end up finding it a home.

@Uptowngirl and @NeverSleeps: I know what you are saying regarding having dogs. My girlfriend is a dog person. I'm a cat person. She always complains about wanting a dog. We already have two cats. She loves the cats, but prefers dogs. I told her when we can buy a house, she can have both dogs and cats. She agreed.

@neversleeps: I have two 70 lb dogs and we fit just fine! Granted, the breed that I have isn't overly active, but a lot of people make it work. You just have to let them out a lot.

@JenMac I would love to have a pug but I believe they shed a lot and my husband has allergies so far we have nixed the idea.

I would love to have a little dog...but I just won't do it until I have access to a backyard. There is no way I am taking a dog out for a walk multiple times a day in this city's crazy weather!

Interesting. I think it's really a good cause, but it seems like hard work having to constantly find new homes for animals all the time. I wish I had it in me.

Lately I'm finding babies super cute. And this was never known to happen before. Is that ticking biological clock thing real?!

Apparently it is real, ladies. This is confirmed by anecdotal evidence from pretty much my whole social circle. First you find babies and dogs super cute, and next thing you know, you HAVE babies and dogs.

Actually, this holds somewhat for men, too.

@DBlack Amen to that...

@BroadwayBk actually the thought of having a child in NYC scares me..besides the expense which is phenomenal, it also the schlepping of the kids on public transport and not having a significant support system around you which adds to my fears, I have friends who are currently in the process of bring up two/three kids in the city and I say hats off to them..actually many of my married friends feel the same way so maybe its not that unnatural to be fearful.
