"Long street but has Interesting Areas"

E. Houston St is a long street that contains many apartment buildings, stores, shops, and restaurants. If you like the diverse eating places, you will like the area. You can take a bus as it will stop in different places along Houston St.

I've been there a few times, and found the place noisy, dirty, and busy. I had to walk in the street at times, especially when vendors park outside in front of stores. If you are okay with that situation, you may actually enjoy being there.
Pros
  • Plenty of stores
  • Plenty of restaurants
Cons
  • Too busy at times
  • Too many people at times

"Long, noisy, but interesting"

Houston St is considered to be the landmark between the Greenwich Village and Soho, and between the East Village and the Lower East Side. It is a busy street that does not seem to offer anything special, since the nicer places are either on the North or South sides of it. However, there are two of my favorite cinemas on that street: The Film Forum (W Houston), a must go for fans of independent movies, and the Sunshine Cinema (E Houston), where all the best non-Hollywood movies are screened.

"Unbelievably fun atmosphere"

Houston is paradise for anyone looking for the true fast-paced New York. Whole Foods by Bowery offers residents a great shopping experience and there are many great restaurants, cafes and delis for people looking for a good bite to eat. Katz's Deli is world famous and serves thousands of massive sandwiches everyday. If you are looking for quality AND quantity in a sandwich this is the place to stop. The nightlife is rich as well, which keeps the neighborhood alive and well at all times.

"The Sunshine on Houston"

E. Houston st in the East village is one of those rare gems in New York City where many of its original establishments are still standing. After you pass the Whole Foods on the intersection with Bowery, you enter a world where there are no skyscrapers and barely any consumerism driven chains to be found. Nestled with First Ave is the Sunshine theater that shows independent films and more "culturally acute" films year round. It is the place to go for some relaxing and enriching movie watching experiences. Right next door is Yona Schimmel's, a Knish cafe that has been in this location since it's opening in the late 1800's. This place is perfect for a post-movie meal, especially in the winter because the Knishes are delicious and truly stick to your ribs. This area is populated mostly with the hipster types that like to stay around the East Village and Williamsburg. The atmosphere is truly enjoyable, and i highly recommend spending an evening exploring this area.

"yes, better than Carnegie deli"

Go here for no other reason than Katz's Deli. Really. In spite of everything else in the area it's my favorite. Be sure to ask one of the owners about the rumors that they're about to sell out to a developer or move the store or retire to Tahiti. Savor the pained look on their faces. And the cheesecake is spectacular. Did I mention they deliver nation wide?

"Historical Houston Street"

The street name Houston confuses many people from outside of New York this is because Houston Street was named for William Houstoun, long before the fame of Sam Houston, for whom the city in Texas is named. But there are sign boards given on this street which makes people travel easily, Just next to the street there is one hotel which is very famous for good and delicious food. Head off a little ways to Pianos and listen to some great local bands.

"Street covered with trees"

East Houston Street is the most famous street in New York it is busy street all the time. People park their vehicles just besides the road, there a huge buildings next to the street, this street is fully covered with beautiful trees on both the sides. Just next to the street there is one hotel which is very famous for good and delicious food. And there is one Cinema Hall where people go to watch movies.

"Best of the LES."

East Houston Street has the best of the Lower East Side going for it. Start off with a potato knish at the famous and delicious landmark of Yonah Schimmel's. Then go to a great arthouse or indie movie at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema, which serves gourmet popcorn and has the most comfortable seats in town. If you have a craving for something heavier, head to Katz's Deli and try to score the table where Harry sat with Sally and Sally had a very good time while eating a pastrami sandwich. They really are almost that good. Head off a little ways to Pianos and listen to some great local bands. Then call it a night - you've done enough!

"In your 20s or 30s?"

This is really a wonderland if you're a new New Yorker or a young person trying to "live" NYC.
