Well, the crime rates are a little higher than I thought they were, but still aren't bad. In fact, compared to a lot of other places, they're good. Being a lifetime resident of Poughkeepsie, I can honestly say I've never felt in danger living here. Neighbors lock their doors for the most part and some have alarm systems, but there's nowhere in town that I'd say is a hot crime area or is dangerous. It's not a place where you have bars on your windows or go to bed worrying about your safety, despite the growing population.

As far as those stats, the risk of violent crime isn't non-existent, but it's still below both New York State and national averages. I haven't witnessed much crime in my decades of residency but this is still the sort of community where it's shocking to hear about it in the event that it happens. Robberies don't really happen here much and you don't hear of a lot of cars getting stolen. Poughkeepsie just isn't a high-crime town.
