"Highly coveted and serene"

West End Avenue like its counterpart on the east side is quite a coveted residential neighborhood of the upper west side of Manhattan. West End Avenue extends from 59th street to 107th and is located just one avenue away from the verdant water front Riverside Park which stretches along the Hudson River from 72nd Street to 158th Street.
West End Avenue is populated by several prewar co-op and redeveloped condominium residences which are housed in gorgeous ornate buildings several of which are exponents of the renaissance style of architecture. Many of these grand and large multi-room residences like their siblings on the east side often figure in the lists of the most expensive residences in New York City. However unlike, East End Avenue which is located at a considerable distance from the nearest subway line, West End Avenue is located just one block away from the no 1 train that traverses north and south on Broadway. Additionally West End Avenue is well served by several cross town buses like the M96,M86, M79, M72 and the M66 which connect it to the east side and other streets and avenues of the west side
West End Avenue is also conveniently located near all the shopping and dining establishments like Fairway Market, Zabar’s, Citarella’s, Harry’s Shoes, H & H Bagels, Loehman’s, Fatty Crab, Filene’s Basement, Big Nicks, Manhattan Diner all of which are on located Broadway which is just a block away from West End Avenue. The location of several good New York City schools like the private Calhoun School and the parochial St Agnes Boys High School on West End Avenue further adds to its desirability.
Pros
  • Hosts some of the best private schools in the city
  • Stunning architecture
  • Easily accessible by subway
Cons
  • Dead at night
  • Primarily residential
  • Boring

"Inexpensive hotel, reaches Central Park"

There are some relatively inexpensive hotels on West End, if you’re into that kind of thing. This is a good location for tourists, especially during the summer, as it’s close to Central Park (which is a beautiful place to tour at any time of the year – it’s a great break from the city streets), and it’s close to Upper West Side amenities like shops and restaurants. There are certainly cheap eats on this road, too – though if you’ve saved enough money on your hotel room, you can definitely find places to splurge on West End Ave.

"Pricey but worth it."

I appreciate West End Avenue for it's nice residential feel and it's proximity to major roads. Broadway is just an Avenue away making everything extremely convenient. The street is well traveled but retains a lot of charm and with Riverside Park 1 avenue to the east it is absolutely the best of both world.

"The perfect place to call home."

West End Avenue has been largely overlooked for decades by city dwellers. It's Western location make some cringe because they fear the subway is a long walk, but West End Avenue is so close to so many major streets that subway stations are not hard to come by. It also offers a great deal of luxury buildings to potential residents and wonderful businesses and service shops to stop in on a leisurely day. Riverside Park is only a short walk away, offering residents a great mix of convenience and serenity.

"Totally underrated - a great residential area!"

West End Ave is one of the best kept secrets of Manhattan. Prices are much lower than closer to the center of the island, but it's actually not far at all to get to the subways. People think that because it's on the edge of the island, it must be a trek to get to the subway, but it's actually no further than living on 2nd Ave on the east side.

West End Ave is mainly residential, with a few upscale stores and a lot of corner convenience stores. To get to real shops or grocery stores, you need to go over a block to Amsterdam or Broadway, but that's hardly a sacrifice for the wonderful residential atmosphere with clean streets and peace and quiet. West End Ave is also just a block away from Riverside Park, the quieter and less-crowded version of Central Park, which only adds further to its residential/suburban appeal.
