Property Taxes

So my husband and I are trying to move to westchester county however the definitive factor as to where we move are the property taxes. We wanted to inquire and just gain information on what counties would be a good option in terms of property taxes and safety, distance to the city is important to us. I feel Mahopac is a little too far for my liking. So any insight into an area that would work for us would be great deeply appreciated!

Joana, good evening. The property taxes carry most of the school expenses, and good schools cost good money to run. That being said, communities with larger commercial areas have lower taxes because they help carry the financial burden. Quality of life in Westchester is quite nice, with many communities offering a wide range of attractions to satisfy their citizens. Feel free to give me a call and we can talk about what your options are.

Remember that when you move out of New York City, you will no longer pay city income tax, which can go a long way to paying property taxes in Westchester. Taxes in lower Westchester can be higher than more northern areas, but they also may include more services such as paid fire department (which can mean lower home owners insurance), public garbage collection, public sewers (so no septic to maintain), municipal water (so no well to maintain), lower commutation fares (the longer the train ride, the higher the fare) and shorter distances to schools, shopping and train station (in some communities like Pelham, Bronxville, Larchmont and some of the river towns, these things can be within walking distance).
