"Maybe not for living, but definitely for visiting."

86th St. Keeps growing!! New high rises, new stores, new subway lines. Expect things to keep getting better. From park to park (Schurz to the East, Central to the West) 86th st. is a worthy stop for anyone looking for some food, some shopping, and some people watching. It will be noisy, and it won't give you the relaxed neighborhood feel of a Greenwich Village, but it does what it does well - and that is to be a place to stop by with it's numerous transportation options, and get stuff done. Happy shopping!

"Shopping, restaurants - but maybe not best for tourists"

If you stay pretty close to the park and Park Ave on this street, you will find a good deal of commodities – places to shop, eat. They may not be the best places the city has to offer, though so be aware of them if you are wandering the neighborhood, but if you’re looking to plan out where you will eat during your New York stay, you may want to stick with trendier areas.
That being said, there are a few places a tourist might find welcoming on this street, like Sotto Cinque – an affordable pasta restaurant with a warm atmosphere.

"Good place to just relax and walk around"

East 86th street is a good place to stop and walk around if you are ever bored and don't want to get caught int he commotion of Times Square. Here you can find great fast food that is much healthier than a McDonalds or Burger King. I am talking about places that sell milkshakes and pretzels as well as donuts.

You can walk around this street and find CD and book stores galore. Many people walk into these stores and relax inside while browsing through the thousands of titles. though it is in the city, it's acutally a good place to relax or kill some time. You also don't need to have a car here, with the abundance of taxis as well as nearby train stations and busses.

Now rent is very expensive here, but that can be expected. After all, we are talking about New York City, but everything is very close by and the supermarket there even delivers your groceries to you. You can do all your food shopping online and have it at your door in a few hours. They accomodate the busy new Yorker very well here.

"Best feature: convenience"

E86th street boasts local and express subway stops, a cross-town bus, gyms, electronics and clothing stores, grocery stores, and even a handful of half-decent restaurants. It's a quick walk to just about anything you need. It's not a mecca for culture or nightlife, but there are some decent spots for that in walking distance.
