I thought it was just me!

Anyone else notice the electronic walk/don't walk signs showing both options at once, lately? Turns out it's not a coincidence!

That's crazy! I've been seeing this a lot in my neighborhood; not sure if I should feel better or worse now that I know the cause.

Oh, so that's why...Half the time I ignore them anyway and just watch for cars.

@Uraniumfish Same here. I always look at the actual traffic light before crossing rather than the crossing signal.

I find that most people ignore not only the traffic lights but traffic as well. They just walk across the street even though cars are coming.

Do it all the time. As a New Yorker, I feel certain that everyone else need to get out of my way.

Psh, walking at crosswalks is for tourists! REAL New Yorkers jaywalk (or take cabs.) ;-)

I see people jaywalk and one guy got hit for doing it. Any time I walk somewhere I use the crosswalk. You can call me what you will, but I will not jaywalk. Actually, a cop told me jaywalking was illegal, but yet they don't bother to arrest people who do it.

I think they ticket people for jaywalking, hhusted, as arresting jaywalkers would fill up the jails pretty fast. You're right, though, police don't seem to enforce laws against it very often.

@ajadedidealist I guess I have finally become a real 'New Yorker' - I tend to jaywalk ever so often mainly because I always seem to be in a hurry and cant wait long enough for the crosswalk to turn.

Well to each his own. I try my best to plan out my activities so I never have to hurry. This way when I walk down the street, and I have to go to a particular store, I will stand at the nearest intersection and wait till the light is in my favor. I have seen too many cars go through redlights. That is why I look before crossing the street.

@ uptowngirl You'll find that this habit, once acquired, never goes away again. Six years living in Europe, and I still did the aggressive crosswalk thing. After six years, I was still in a hurry.

Seems like it's practically impossible to just stroll along in the city. Wouldn't you get run over by the impending crowds? You are probably moving faster than you realize, hhusted.

I think I started jaywalking the first time I ever set foot in this city - I was still at an age where I wanted to fit in :)

@BroadwayBK: Yeah, I'll walk down the street quickly, but I will not jaywalk. At least I won't do it anymore. The reason I said that is because I did it once and barely missed getting hit by a bike and then a car came at me from around the corner. Talking about having the breath knocked out of you.
