Morning Commute in NYC

Well folks, it looks like I will begin a morning commute to work. At least I don't have to leave until 10am.

When I go out, I notice there isn't too many people out. So I guess leaving around 10 is good.

My workload diminished to the point I had to get a part time job out of the home.

Oh, well, the boss said I will only have to work onsite for a month.

How about the rest of you. Does anyone work offsite most of the time, or onsite, or a combination of both.

I work at home for my freelance writing, within Oxford for my degree (a mix of research and tutorials in College), and in London on weekends for my tutoring, which is a 2.5 hour commute to my house (10 minute bicycle to train station, like to get there 20 min early, 1 hr on train, one hour to my client's house, double for the return)

How are you able to afford traveling back-and-forth from NYC to London each week? Not trying to pry, just curious.

@hhusted commuting at 10 am is not so bad .. I think the maximum rush is from 6am -9am.. I have not worked outside my home in NYC but do usually schedule dentist appointments for the morning hours so I am aware of how crowded the trains can be especially the 4,5, 6 train lines.

@Everyone Najibullah Zazi the Afghan man who was arrested in Queens last year as a terror suspect has confessed to have created a plot to bomb the 1,2, 4 and 6 subway lines last September.

Can you imagine the carnage that would have taken place, if he had succeeded with his plot. and done the deed during the rush hour morning commute?..

@Uptowngirl: I remember reading that today. That is scary. Thankfully I take the D train to work. Thankfully it will not happen. That is all we need - another disaster.

Oh, God, I feel sick just reading about it! I lived in such, such terror taking the subway in NYC - I have an irrational (rational?) FEAR of terrorism - the point, rather, I suppose - on underground metros, planes, airports, buses, everything. It really hurts my ability to travel, and when I hear things like this it makes it that much worse.

I heard about that too! The 1,2,3 train is crazy in the morning! Basically everyone who lives uptown works downtown. Just terrible to think about.
@hhusted: 10 am is still pretty gnarley. At least, it is coming out of Williamsburg.

That's why I like the bus. It's slow, but it is really pleasant - I prefer to spend longer and use my time reading, relaxing, and looking at scenery rather than being miserable commuting underground.

Does anyone else think about how life just goes on in spite of all of the bomb threats or terrorists caught in the planning stages? As in, people just continue to get on the train during rush hour in mass quantities, even though it's probably crossed everyone's mind that anything could happen?

I also have to wonder how all of these terrorists get caught in the planning stages all the time.... How does that happen? Not that I'm not happy it does.

@Neversleeps, I think about it all the time. I thought about that today getting on the 123. I mean, I didn't have much of a choice so I just hopped on, but it definitely crossed my mind.

@NeverSleeps surely you watch the Wire? They get caught in the planning stages because the authorities are all up in people's business, monitoring calls and bank accounts and whatnot...

@NeverSleeps I always think about the possibility of something happening, even when I'm on the lowly G train. That said, I must not seriously think death by train is actually possible or I probably wouldn't board the thing in the first place.

My friend studies terrorism (academically!) and she says that there's loads of plans that are caught but not reported in NYC and other places - not sure if that makes me more or less confident in the system.
