Politics in NYC?

Just curious - the stereotype is that all or almost all NYCers are Democrats, and that's certainly true in my case and most of the people I know. What about you all? Do you know many Republicans, or do you find that your friendship and acquaintance circle is mostly Democrats?

Where do you go to get involved? I went to a few Obama rallies and fundraisers during the 2008 campaign - what about you all?

The Democratic Party does hold the majority of public offices in NYC. I looked this one up: as of November 2008, 67% of registered voters in the city are Democrats. So it's not just your impression, ajadeidealist. Granted, it seems people tend to socialize with others who hold the same general opinions, so if you're a Democrat chances are a lot of your friends are too. This fun fact is pretty striking, though:

New York City has not been carried by a Republican in a statewide or presidential election since 1924.

Most of my friends in the city are passionate democrats but during the 2008 elections there were divided into two distinct camps namely the pro-Hilary lot v/s the pro-Obama lot.

Sounds about right to me, @uptowngirl - I don't know a single Republican in NYC, but the Hilary vs. Barack competition was FIERCE around the time of the primaries. Much more so than the general election, which felt rather like NYers felt a great Democratic Solidarity, rather than any sense of party rivalry.

You bet ajadedidealist, even the debates among my own circle of friends were heated. It was as if it was a cry for feminism such was the passion among the Hilary supporters who truly believe until today that the USA would do well under a President who is female.

There are a few Republicans in my social circle, but I suppose they are usually the odd men out. The fact that I actually know a few right-leaning voters may have something to do with the fact that I am from Florida and many of my close friends are those who moved from there to NYC after leaving college.... The fact that Florida is a swing state tends to mean that you don't always find yourself hanging out with people who have the same political views.

I am a democrat and vote that way. I do not comment about my political affiliations as they tend to be controversial.
