The Changing Face of NYC

Where else can you go to find great stores and bargains than NYC. They have every store imaginable. Well they used to As you may know, one such NYC store and landmark has decided to close its doors. This store is Filene's Basement. They filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday.

You can still go get bargains if you hurry. Not sure how long the store will stay open. I was told they will stay open till March.

How many people do you know who shopped at Filene's Basement?

As a note: There are 100 stores closing. One of them is located at 20th St and 6th Ave. If you know of any other Filene Stores in the area, let me know.

Thank goodness! Wouldn't want to lose such a valuable NYC standby!

Yes, according to the article, the sell of the stores is dependent on the Bankruptcy Court's approval. Once that happens the sale can be initiated.

I hope it does happen. Hate to lose another store in NYC.

@hhusted you can say that again, in one of my previous posts I had mentioned the long empty store fronts on the 86th Street retail corridor well apparently Fairway Market is now positioned to open its third Manhattan outlet at the vacant retail spot at 240, E 86ths street between Second and Third Avenues. Apparently Fairway had to battle stores like Whole Foods and Nordstrom Rack for the space.

If Filene's Basement closes, I'm taking to the streets in protest! Well, not really, but still...

My friend told me that women she runs into have been complaining about Filene's Basement closing. However, now that there is a chance they may be saved, hopefully that will brighten some faces.

You bet Uraniumfish! I will join you .. just last week I bought two pairs of long, dark rinsed , flare jeans at Filene's at reasonable down to earth prices. I know, I know the trends dictate skinny, deconstructed but I seem to like this particular style and was searching high and low for them ever since Gap discontinued their truly excellent Essential jeans last year. Hate it when a brand does so...not everyone is a skinny size 0 ..you think market research would tell them that..

Yet another NYC icon- the bohemian haven , The Chelsea Hotel is now on the chopping block. The red brick hotel building which hosts hotel rooms and rental apartments has been associated with several NY famous 'artistic' personalities including Sid Vicious and Nancy but now the property which needs expensive refurbishment is being sold by its owners who can't seem to afford the repairs.

@uptowngirl Wow, I'm really sad to hear about that one. It will be depressing if the place gets turned into yet another luxury condo building.

@Uraniumfish seems like the character of NYC is changing what with chain stores and bank branches being planned for every street corner. I sure hope it doesn't ever transform into just another US city. NYC has a 'soul' thanks to its quirky , one of a kind buildings and establishments many of which have a history associated with them, it would truly be tragic if it was all lost and the city became just another bland metropolis where everything is new, shiny and bland.

@uptowngirl Well, we'll a long way from that yet. Although the HAVE taken over Times Square, it's hard to see the blandness take over everywhere.

How depressing, @uptowngirl! Although I hope that New York will and can never lose its indomitable spirit - change is what makes this vibrant city great!

Stores come and stores go. That is the way it has been in this city. Every time a store closes its doors, another one is seen opening. It appears to be a cycle. Don't you think.

Well, yeah. But that doesn't mean it's not sad to see some things on the way out.
