Steinway Pl
"an industrial area"
Steinway Pl is a short street in a mostly industrial area in northern Queens. It is mostly factories, warehouses, and similar businesses. I knew someone who worked there, it is kind of an out of the way, removed area. No reason to go there really unless you work there, there are no houses, shops, or restaurants. It is not unsafe, just nothing there but industry.
23rd Ave
"busy street, lots of businesses"
Astoria Blvd N runs parallel to the Grand Central Parkway. It is a busy road and mostly commercial but surprisingly has some residential homes and town houses as well. This is a safe but not especially upscale area. The stores are not upscale boutiques and nice restaurants, but more along the lines of carry out restaurants and small utilitarian stores. Not recommended to live but you don't need to avoid the area.
Astoria Park South
"pretty street, near park"
Astoria Park South is a pretty, tree lined street that runs right down to the waterfront in Queens. It goes right by Astoria Park, which has a really nice track and tennis courts. This is a really nice safe area in a desirable location, but can be a little congested at times. It seemed to be a pleasant place to live.
23rd St
"run down street in desirable location"
I am most familiar with 23rd street in the Astoria area of Queens. Astoria is a pretty desirable neighborhood, so I expected this area to be nice too. It seemed safe, but was a little run down and not as cozy feeling, with fewer trees than you find in some other residential areas of Queens. There are quite a few apartments in this area, not a lot of restaurants or shops, some businesses/offices.
85th St
"lots of apartments, close to train"
I am most familiar with 85th St north of Roosevelt. In this area, there are lots of apartment complexes that are fairly affordable. This is a quiet, tree lined street with sidewalks that make it a nice area to walk in. This is a safe area in central Queens, I would recommend it for apartment living. It runs close to several train stops for easy (but still fairly long) commutes to Manhattan.
226th St
"nice but slightly boring area"
226th Street is in eastern Queens, NY. It is a very long commute to Manhattan for work or entertainment. However, you are close to the Long Island Expressway so that is convenient. This is a really quiet middle class neighborhood with a friendly feel. Sidewalks make it easy to walk and there are lots of trees. This would be a really pleasant neighborhood in which to live, but it doesn't really have the NYC feel and is so far from Manhattan, which is a negative.

"safe residential street, but lots of airport noise"
Butler Street is a short residential street in northern Queens. It is a really nice middle class, old fashioned neighborhood. It is a safe area and the neighbors are really friendly. The only drawback is the noise. It is very close to LaGuardia Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the US, so there is nearly constant air traffic noise. You get used to it somewhat, but the planes can be really noisy.
