Canada Geese slaughtered in Prospect Park

Just came across this awful article in the NYT that mentions that 400 Canada Geese in Prospect Park were gassed in order to control their population for they are allegedly hazardous to aircraft that use the NYC airports-JFK and La Guardia Airport both of which are located within 6 miles of Prospect Park.

While I do realize the dangers that birds pose to flights, can't help wondering if an alternative solution to the gassing of the birds could be found?

Um, yeah, I'm pretty sure they could have figured out an alternative method to killing. But, it's not surprising. Does our country ever think of another option?

@JenMac even then it was surprising they gassed the birds given the large animal conservation lobby in the country/city. Wonder if bodies like PETA would have raised a stink?

I'm surprised the animal abuse people didn't have a field day with this story. Gassing birds to keep the airways safe for planes is a terrible excuse. They could have come up with an alternative solution.
