Green spaces at a risk

New Yorkers love their parks, while most of us list Central Park at the top of our lists there are several other green spaces in the city which have their own admirers. I for one love the Carl Shurz Park, the Astoria Park and several other parks and gardens in the city. However I didnt know that many community gardens were protected from development by the Garden settlement which is soon coming to an end. It would be tragic if the city lost its green spaces and was populated by even more buildings. Do you have a favorite community garden or green space?

I looove the little garden on Houston and Bowery and have spent many quiet lunchtimes there. How sad that it might become just another shiny overpriced condo building.

Prospect Park is by far my favorite park in the city, but I also love my community garden on 6th Ave in Park Slope; it's so beautiful right now with dahlias and sunflowers and whatnot. Is there something that can be done to renew the Garden settlement?

There has to be a way to renew the Garden settlement. I can't imagine NYC without its community gardens.

Yeah - I'll bet garden groups are up in arms as we speak. Bushwick/Bed-Stuy could use some more gardens. There is actually one right under the JMZ line on Broadway, but it's not incredibly beautiful, as you can imagine.

Thanks for the link @uptowngirl. If my beautiful community garden is in danger, then I would really like to do what I can to protect it.

Have you guys visited the East Village-located garden (Avenue A or B I believe, near Tompkins Square Park)? It's really beautiful and sweet - I'm a huge fan!

@ajadedidealist No, I've never even seen it - and I used to pass by Tompkins Square Park all the time. I guess that's what I get for being such an introvert.
