Historic Savings Banks in New York City

From the 1890's to the 1930's a spate of savings banks were built in New York, the splendor of which rivals some of the best civic buildings around. They're a vanishing lot (the one at 96th Street and Amsterdam Avenue was turned into a Duane Reade, ad the one one East 85th became a Gap store).

1. Bowery Savings Bank (1895)
130 Bowery between Grand and Broome Streets
2. Former Bowery Savings Bank (1923), now Cipriani's at 42nd Street
110 East 42nd Street, between Park and Lexington
3. Former Central Savings Bank (1928)
2100 Broadway at West 73rd Street
4. Former Greenwich Savings Bank, now Republic National Bank (1924)
1352-1362 Broadway at West 36th Street
5. Brooklyn:
The Dime Savings Bank of New York (1908)
9 DeKalb Avenue, off Fulton Street
Note: beautiful inscriptions about money and morality on the benches.
6. Brooklyn:
Former Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower, now Republic National Bank (1929)
1 Hanson Place at Ashland Place

The Trader Joe's in Brooklyn Heights is housed in a restored Independent Bank building - and it's a pretty gorgeous place to grocery shop, I have to say. It's often referred to as a "landmark" building, but I'm not sure how historic it actually is.

oh btw the Ridgewood Savings Bank dates back to 1920 and it has a second Manhattan outlet at 73rd Street and Second Avenue. The bank also offers Notary services in addition to safe deposit boxes ,insurance products and other services. The Ridgewood Savings Bank actually has a few branches in the Bronx and Brooklyn as well-http://www.ridgewoodbank.com/home/locations

It is interesting to note how old some banks are. I have seen the buildings of some banks, and the buildings seem to date back 100 years or more. I wonder what the very first bank was in NYC. Anyone have a clue.

I was just inside the big hall at 1 Hanson Place for the flea market and it really is a lovely space. No one builds like that any more.

@Uraniumfish I agree it indeed is a gorgeous building . I much prefer all these old buildings of NY to the many glass fronted towers that are sprouting up everywhere. I know many people love them but I seem to think they lack the character that old buildings have .. oh well you have to follow the adage the old order yields place to the new...
