New Restaurant Openings

New York's economy maybe shaky but the city's restaurateurs continue to chug along in an effort to cater to the city's limitless appetite for new restaurants.
Here is a list of 12 new restaurants opening this fall. Its truly remarkable and a tribute to the resilience of the city ..or perhaps the economy is finally turning and the good times of pre-2008 are coming back?

Thanks, uptowngirl. I doubt people will stop opening new restaurants in the city, even in hard times. Th epossibility of making it here culinarily is pretty irresistible, I bet.

"Mehtaphor" is a pretty silly name. I bet you no matter how good the food is, that name will defeat it in the long run.

@Uraniumfish Yes NYC has a huge 'going out to eat' culture. So many of my friends especially the single ones eat out almost every night or they order in. I tend to eat at home during the week but do enjoy going out to restaurants on the weekends.

New York may not be recession-proof, but it has a recession-proof spirit: I love to see just how much NYC entrepreneurs have confidence in themselves and their ideas. (although in the case of "Mehtaphor," perhaps that confidence is just a tad misplaced)

I think the owner of Metaphor is trying to be a little clever or just a bit different to draw attention to his/her space in a crowded restaurant space.

@uptowngirl I know, but it's so...lame. This is a city full of places with stylish, clever names: "Space" and "Bread" come to mind, and that one strikes me as just too silly. Also, if the place becomes the new buzzword, people are going to even have a hard time looking it up in their google searches because of the silly spelling. It seems ill-advised to make yourself hard to find. People out on the town only need to do one unsuccessful search on their Blackberries before they give up and search for the location of the next hot restaurant. See what I'm saying?

@Uraniumfish thank's for drawing my attention to the spelling its Mehtaphor... and the chef is Jehangir Mehta..hence the play on the word Metaphor. He is an excellent pastry chef who originally hails from Mumbai and he owns a small restaurant called Graffiti in the East Village-http://www.graffitinyc.com/. Those who know him will get the spelling I think even then he's taking a gamble..

It seems like that guy has let his Next Top Chef fame go to his head a little bit naming the place after himself - Uraniumfish makes a good point when she says that the spelling will throw people off. How will iPhone users find it with Google maps if they can't even spell it? He would have done himself a favor if he spelled it correctly.

Most people have trouble correctly spelling words that actually exist, and if he's banking on his own name recognition then he really has let his fame go to his head. But we shall see. Successfully getting a new restaurant off the ground in Manhattan is one of those legendarily difficult things to accomplish.

In terms of puns, though, I have to admit Ben N'Jerry's always brings a smile to my face. Jamaican' Me Crazy. Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream. Chubby Hubby. Cherry Garcia. Yes Pecan! (The Obama Themed one). I love my bad food puns. My friends and I always wanted to open a Shakespeare-themed bakery with lots of literary pun-names like "Hamlet and Eggs," "Much Ado About Muffins," etc.
