New York City Blogs

The Bowery Boys (theboweryboys.blogspot.com) – Collection of historical posts concerning the city. Highpoint of this blog is the extensive historical podcasts which can either be accessed via the sight or on iTunes; apparently these were named among the best travel podcasts by the UK’s Daily Telegraph. Check out such featured topics as Old McSorley’s Ale House, the Pan Am Building and Shakespeare in the Park.

Overheard in New York (overheardinnewyork.com) – This website may have been slightly overshadowed by the creation of Texts from Last Night, but great postings keep appearing here. If you haven’t already, prepare to be amazed by the stupidity of the things that come out of your fellow New Yorkers’ mouths.

Curbed NY (curbed.com) –Blog that discusses one of New York’s most vile yet most neccessary topics: real estate. This blog somehow makes real estate topics humorous and gives you the feeling that it’s on your side, unlike so much to do with real estate. Features a search function that allows you to select the neighborhood you’d like to read about.

Gothamist (gothamist.com) – Get your fill of the local news, and explore topics such as “Dickchicken Revealed (Sort Of)” and “Guiliani: Terrorists Never Attacked When Bush Protected Us.” Ha.

NYC Bloggers (nycbloggers.com) – Not a blog exactly, but a website that organizes thousands of NYC blogs by subway line and stop. Admittedly, this blog could use a little cleaning up, but hopefully you can use it to find a blogger near you (if they are still blogging).

New York Daily Photo (newyorkdailyphoto.blogspot.com) – One photographer’s personal take on the city, or exactly what it sounds like, with a bit of musing commentary to accompany each photo.

How about Gawker for that all-important New York pastime of following celebrities.

@uraniumfish I thought of adding Gawker, because it's based in New York and often makes references that only New Yorkers would understand, but it's pretty all-encompassing as far a content goes. Still a great New York-ish blog though.

Another good blog to start the New Year off with is the New York Times' wellness blog: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/

@uraniumfish I can't believe I forgot Flavorpill; I've only been receiving it in my inbox for years....

It's an event listing that exists for several cities, though, and the New York rendition is located at http://flavorpill.com/newyork :)

Going.com also offers a similar event listing which can be emailed directly to you: http://newyork.going.com/events.php?tab=browse&b=week

TimeOut is also a great resource for events

http://newyork.timeout.com/

I know someone who writes restaurant reviews for New York's TimeOut magazine, and I know they aren't allowed to write anything particularly bad about a place, so be wary of the optimistic reviewing.

Yeah I wrote for them too. The idea was that you should write about what you like, and let what you don't like linger in obscurity. That works as a system since the good places get lots of free promotion.

Out of curiosity, how did you end up doing reviews? Seems like a great gig.

I was a student and someone from the university recommended me. It was nice insofar as I got free meals, but I didn't otherwise get paid.

I'm pretty sure that's still how it works; the free meals make it seem worth it.

I eventually wanted to get paid for my work, so it only seemed okay to do as a student.
