NYC women and their shoes
As a woman, I have a huge passion for shoes and it seems I am not alone for AM new york says numerous NYC women will not give up their high heels no matter what.

I too have heel spurs (plantar fasciitis) caused by faulty shoes and this has led me to pack away most of my high heels. Does anyone else suffer these agonies?

Yeah, my girlfriend has it to. She was told to wear heels that were at least two inches from the ground but no further.

So what are heel spurs? I'm a bit of a tomboy and tend to stay away from too-high heels except for rare occasions.

It's where the heel hurts when the foot is elevated too high. It has to do with the tendons in the bottom of the feet or foot, getting stretched too far. Something like that.

Is it a permanent condition?

@uptowngirl My mom had that. The doctor told her to cut down on her tennis playing for a year, and the pain mostly went away.

@Uraniumfish, Never Sleeps the Doctor has told me to soak my feet in hot water for ten minutes at the end of the day, it seems to be working but the pain has not totally gone away and I have switched to wearing mainly flats as well.

I never wear high heels now that I live here. Hats off to all the women who do; but, I just can't stomach walking so much in those buggers.

@JenMac NYC women are crazy and this explains why the newspapers here are full of adverts for bunion surgery, podiatrists and the like. These guys must have roaring businesses what with so many women complaining of aching feet but still not giving up their shoes.

@Uraniumfish: My girlfriend has had it for a long time. She doesn't feel it when she keeps her feet elevated and when she wears those orthonics, or whatever these insoles are called that go into the shoe to brace the lower part of the feet. But when she walks flatfooted, her one foot hurts a lot. When it hurts, she takes a bottle of water, freezes it, then places the frozen bottle under her bad foot, and messages it with the cold bottle. She claims it helps a lot.

@Everybody: I really don't understand the reason behind wearing high heels anyway. It raises the body off the ground, but it also places a strain on the back and neck. At least this is what my doctor told me. No wonder there are more women in the chiropractor's office then men. :)

@hhusted you men will never understand the allure of women's shoes..I personally feel heels give me a bit of elegance which flats cant really replace..

Yeah, it does make you feel a bit saucier, I'll admit. But, ten blocks later, I have a limp going and there's nothing saucy about that.

@JenMac so true not to mention the blisters they sometimes generate.. when you live in NYC I think that its important that you have to have well fitting, well made shoes for the pavements are hard and this city is a 'walking city',

@Uptowngirl: You got that right. NYC is a "walking city." So you better have well fitting shoes or you may find yourself in a heap of trouble.

@Uptowngirl: Unfortunately, we all learn the hard way. I guess that is the rebellious nature in us. We want to do things our way, even if it hurts us in some way.

@hhusted bet you've heard of the saying there is no pleasure without pain.. it applies to us shoe lovers who want pretty shoes and are willing to bear the pain that goes with them.

@JenMac So true. High heels are only appropriate for women who get themselves driven everywhere. Kind of the modern-day equivalent of foot-binding, which was also considered highly erotic in its time and hobbled its victims for life!

I am loving that platform-ish heels are sort of trendy at the moment - they are a lot more manageable than your typical stiletto spikes.

As the good book says, "You sow what you reap." So, if you wear high-heel shoes, you are going to suffer the consequences of it. Frankly, Uptowngirl, I would rather have pleasure than pain.

Actually, I believe you reap what you sow.
And looking good in beautiful shoes is very pleasurable.

@BroadwayBK well said.. btw I too love those platform wedges though its quite treacherous to navigate Hong Kong's hilly streets in them, I have taken a spill twice on the pavements here no fun believe me.. so they have been packed away in favor of flats.

@BroadwayBK: Yeah, at what price tag. I'm more into being comfortable than attractive looking. If you don't like what I wear, give me the money to buy something more expensive. That is what I tell people who complain about what I buy and wear.

@uptown, I feel like every time you say where you are it's a different place! I'm only slightly jealous and only slightly don't feel bad for you when you feel in heels in another land :)

@JenMac we've decide to treat these three years here as an adventure and see as much as we can hence I seem to be in a different land ever so often. One thing for sure though the pavements in Hong Kong are just as hard and unforgiving on shoes as the ones in NYC are.
