A new subway map for New York City

As new yorkers ,we all have used the city's subway map at sometime or the other ..why I remember the first few times that I visited the city I just couldnt get my head around the subway lines they seemed so confusing and so many! Even when I first moved here, for months I walked around with a subway and a street map though now I just use hopstop.com on my phone .. In an age where scores of people use a smart phone , the New York City subway map continues to hold its iconic status on NYC's landscape so much so that the MTA is due to release a new subway map next month. The new map will have the new subway routes i.e . the M train will now be shown as an orange line while the V and W trains will disappear..the MTA has ordered millions of new maps for distribution in June 2010 and suddenly now I am craving for a new one! you?

Not really. I don't travel that much. If I have to travel to Brooklyn or Queens for some reason, I'll ask the person I'm visiting what subway line I need to take. If they post the map on the present MTA website, I can always go there to look at it. Thanks for the heads up.

Aww....I got attached to the normal map. It's funny how Manhattan is increasing in size/ratio on the map, though - steadily since 1900 or so!

@Uraniumfish: Do you have maps as wallpaper now? Seems collecting maps and pinning them to the wall would eventually cover the entire wall, at least a major part of it.

I have a subway pre-9/11 subway map somewhere, and it's crazy to see how much that thing has changed since then. Even my iPhone seems to be unaware that the G train goes to Park Slope now and that I don't actually have to walk to Red Hook to get on it. So, technology aside (admittedly, I should be using Hopstop instead of that stupid default iPhone map app), a paper map does come in handy once in a while.

I have a huge map book of historical maps of NYC, from the very beginning of history on the island of Manhattan to present, and it goes through the various subway maps too. I love the look of maps, and I guess no app can substitute!

@ajadedidealist These places tend to be overrated anyway. I dated a New York native who actually got anxiety in big stores like Wal-Mart and Target, which was so weird to me because these places are such a staple of suburban living that it seemed strange that anyone wouldn't just be used to them.

@NeverSleeps It actually is... I had a friend who was a department manager at Target for a while, and the store actively strives to out-sell Wal-Mart, but yeah right. Especially in a recession! My money's on Wal-Mart, even if I am not much of a fan.

@uptowngirl No, I wasn't saying that. I remember the pandemonium caused when Target opened. Just noting that there would never be anyone unfamiliar with such a store in suburbia, whereas it definitely happens here.

And as for the famous designer thing, I have a few pieces from some of those lines, and I also have a friend who has a really cute dress from one of those collaborations. People are always asking where she got it, and she doesn't lie - but does feel the need to explain how it's from one of those famous designer for Target lines.

The only places where I cannot get reception is in the subway. However, AT&T told me they are adding cells there all the time. The problem with the subway is getting permission from MTA so they can go down there and install the cells.

@JenMac I would switch to Verizon in an instant. AT&T has the worst reception in Manhattan - it takes sooo long just to use GPS.

@hhusted I've heard that reception not only depends upon the service you use but also the model of cell phone you have. But if you have AT&T and head to the Lower East Side or some other cell phone infested place on a busy Friday night, and I think you will have the same problems. All those kids with iPhones gathered in one place tend to overpower the towers or something. Maybe the awesome reception you have boils down to not noticing how bad it is because you don't get out as much as other AT&T customers?
Also heard that MTA is not keen on putting towers in the subway because of the whole terrorist threat thing - but that's just a rumor, I haven't Googled it and don't mean to be a fear monger.

According to AT&T, they're covering 97% of the USA. I suppose the problem with reception has something to do with a usage overload? Maybe what they need are less customers.

And...wow. Meditative moments on the subway? I either have my nose stuck in a book or a I am dodging the rushing commuters.

I don't so much get meditative on the subway but just try to endure.

And on that note, the red line was a disaster yesterday and what the heck are we paying for? And in the evening the N line was just gone. Gone. Took me forever to get into Brooklyn.

There is really never a good season to be in the subway - it's either too cold or too hot down there, and it's filthy year round. Some wifi to take your mind off things is exactly what the place needs.

@BroadwayBK: I lost my signal once while right in my own apartment. I called AT&T and they told me a cell was down. Ever since they repaired it, I had no trouble. I also talked to an AT&T technician and relayed some info about what you guys were saying regarding no signal in certain areas. He replied that in most cases it could be the phone. The antenna on the phone may be weak or substandard. I do know when I upgraded my phone, I noticed I had better reception in many places I did not get before.

I have an irrational fear of subways. Not as bad as flying, but I hate being "contained" (and yes, fear of terrorism is part of it). I prefer to take the bus wherever I can. At least I can see the world outside my window!

There are still security guards randomly picking people for bag searches at my Atlantic Ave stop. Has anyone seen them anywhere else? Do you think it's because of the One Hanson Place tower?

@Uraniumfish I would guess that it's because it's the busiest stop and the one where the most trains converge in Brooklyn. Of course it also matters that rich people live above it. And there's that ginormous mall overhead, too.

@uptowngirl Sorry to alarm you, I didn't mean that something had happened at One Hanson Place, only that it would be the only "target" I can possibly imagine and therefore the only reason I see for the random searches. Which are still going on, by the way, though apparently not every day. What gives? What are they expecting to happen / not happen?

I have never seen this. I mean, I once saw some searching going on in Union Square, but that was long ago. How legal is it for them to conduct such searches? I mean, what legislation allows them to do that and how far are they allowed to take such a search?

Good question, BroadwayBK. I've never been stopped and searched, and have always wondered what would happen if I decline - like, if I'm late and not in the mood to deal with them, are they really allowed to detain me?

Maybe it's similar to when cops search vehicles. If they have no good reason to conduct a search, an officer has to ask the driver if the car can be searched. If the driver says okay, the search can go on, but the driver can always say no. Again, I'm just guessing, as I've never actually been searched.

@Everybody: Based on civil law, if a cop wishes to search you, he must have reason to. He cannot just go up to you and search you. There has to be a reason. If there have been terror alerts in the area, that is grounds for checking, But just to do a random search for the sake of it is not legal. If anyone were to get approached by a cop and they told you to wait because they wanted to search you, you have the legal right to ask why. If they say it is procedure or they suspect a terrorist may be in the area, that might be okay. But if they say they just want to check people for safety reasons, that is not enough to warrant a check, unless you did something prior to approaching the cop, and he saw you do it. Then he has the right to search you.

@NeverSleeps Interesting! I'm definitely not comfortable with searches conducted in the name of safety from terrorism, if it means we all have to give up certain rights as a result. Doesn't it seem like threat of terrorism can be invoked in all sorts of questionable scenarios to step on people's basic rights?

Or, even more specifically: in the last ten years, there has been exactly ONE real terrorist threat in our city, and that particular threat could never have been averted even if there had been random searches in subways! So how could random searches be at all a justifiable way of deterring anything?
