Assault in Central Park

I just came across this news item and was immediately reminded of the Central Park jogger assault that took place years ago. This new incident took place in my neck of the woods an area which is considered by most to be extremely safe populated as it is with tony buildings which have round the clock doormen. Just goes to show its not as safe and secure as it is made out to be..

By the way, I just read that the victim is now being declared a suspect because she changed her story to the police.

They don't give enough information to understand what did happen. Was she raped or not, and why would she lie?

I hate it when women lie about that stuff. It gives the rest of us a bad name. I saw on TV once this teen that claimed she had been raped at a party she was invited to. What I found odd was her claim didn't measure up to the evidence that was put against her. Video clips of herself being rather "close" to the suspects and doing whatnot. Her friends even thought she was lying. Plus, she didn't make the claim believable. I think she must have done it beucase one of the suspects dad was a city official. Very highly respected. When I saw the boys video on what he saidhappened, I don't know, there was just something about it that I believed. And I hve known wmen who really were raped. One, it took her years to say something. The first person she really told was me. Sorry, it's one of those subjects for me. Though I do agree that there are places you shouldn't be at certain hours. Especially in the area these lady was in.

@NeverSleeps Awful article, it makes me angry to know the system can get so corrupt as to not even be helpful or doing the job it's in place to do. I bet that detective didn't make any friends in his own department.

It made me think about how New York is supposedly pretty safe for a big city. Or is it...?

That is crazy! There are an extra six women in that case alone who could have never had to go through what they went through.

@Uraniumfish: First of all she was drunk. Second, perhaps one of the guys had threatened her if she said anything. So she kept quiet until later.

@hhusted we have a neighborhood watch team in the neighborhood in London where my mother in law resides though I can hardly see such an association being formed in the neighborhood where I live..folks seem to largely depend on their doormen and the installed security equipment to ensure a safe environment.

@hhusted I really cant see that happening in Manhattan somehow, everybody is too busy and self-involved with their own lives.. can I really imagine some of the chi-chi folks who live on Park Avenue and its whereabouts to form a neighborhood watch committee? not happening any time soon..NYC is too vast and too diverse.

@uptowngirl And too anonymous. People don't really get involved in each other's business...

Still, all things considered, I feel "safe" in NYC - although my fear of terrorism can be an irrational block to otherwise happy living!

@Uraniumfish @uptowngirl Right... we all remember that poor guy who was stabbed to death saving some woman, and just how many people cared to call 911.

@everyone And I am with ajadedidealist - I feel safe, except for the occasional thoughts of bombs and whatnot.
