Diluting the NYC brand

Bloomingdales opened its first international store in Dubai earlier this year

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/31/bloomingdales-dubai-opens_n_443699.html

and now NYU has opened an outpost in Abu Dhabi

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/21/education/21nyu.html?_r=1

These institutions/establishments are usually always associated with NYC and with their exportation don't you think NYC is losing some of its allure?

Well, not necessarily, uptowngirl, if these other cities are so concerned with importing their own taste of NYC!

Eh, I'm no Bloomingdales fan - at least not particularly! Give me Bergdorf's anyday! Not that I can afford anything in there...

I think Bloomies has already lost a lot of that allure - they are in cities in just about every state these days. Somehow it's not that surprising that they are setting one up in the consciously upscale city of Dubai.

And that NYU school sounds awesome - I wanna go! Only, knowing what NYU kids are like around here, I'm not sure I would be a good fit.

@ajadedidealist a friend of mine who is a shopaholic swears that often the sales at Bergdorf's are even better than the ones at Bloomies. Perhaps you should check them out .. I only go to Bergdorf's to drool at their jewelry section, They stock a Jeweler called Paul Morelli whose stuff is fabulous but so expensive! sigh!!!

@NeverSleeps I think you are right about Bloomies - there is one in my hometown in Florida, as well as in every other major city in the state. I think I went to just about every Florida location before I ever set foot in the one here.

@uptowngirl That's good to know - I recently realized that I am spending way too much money on clothing and that my mom on to something when she made us shop from the sales racks for all those years.

@BroadwayBK I try not to pay full price for anything I buy ,unless I really really love the item of clothing /accessory I am buying. Luckily Bloomies and other stores like Anne Taylor etc regularly send out coupons which help shave off a substantial amount of the usually hefty retail price. Basically I love a bargain!

I enjoy walking through Bergdorf's, especially during Christmasstime, but I'm far too frugal (read: "cheap," "poor," "a writer.") to shop there!

@uptowngirl Well, you have the right idea. I didn't even realize how much money I'd been throwing away on clothes that weren't on sale until I discovered the sales rack of the Brooklyn Urban Outfitters - just about their entire stock ends up down there after a few weeks on the upstairs racks!

@BroadwayBK one NYC shopping guide that I follow on Twitter says that Barney's, Saks and Bergdorfs are currently having their summer clearance upto 60-75% off...

@uptowngirl I love end-of-the-season sales! Best time to get shoes (and coats, at the end of winter).

@BroadwayBK Though I can't get my head around the Fall fashion in the stores in this 90 degree heat ..does anyone on this forum shop ahead of the seasons like a true-blue, loaded fashionista?

@Everybody: I'm not into Bloomingdales. I was told by someone who shopped there a year ago that Bloomingdales is a rich man's story. I don't know how true that is. But I did go into Bloomingdales one day and when I went to grab a sweater, and saw the price tag, I threw it down and walked out. I went to K-Mart and got the same exact style sweater for half the price.

@hhusted I have shopped at both places and I seriously doubt that Kmart has the exact same merchandise as Bloomies.. a Marshall's and TJ Maxx and even Century 21 may have the same stuff but not Kmart. I tend to buy clothes for my nephew's and nieces at both stores and I in fact scored a $18 Ralph Lauren toddler dress at Bloomies recently which I really dont think I would have got at KMart which has Levis, Wrangler and Basic Editions it's own brand but does not stock Ralph Lauren.

@Uptowngirl: I am dead serious. I saw the exact same style of sweater at K-Mart for half the price, and I bought it. This was last year and I still wear it on chilly days. I know what I bought girl. I am not saying K-Mart has all the same merchandise as Bloomingdales. I am only saying they had the sweater.

@uptowngirl I know a lot of people who work in fashion, but I don't think even they do that - I guess they are not the live-beyond-your-means types.

The make of clothes at places like Kmart are way different than a place like Bloomies. The quality, feel and fit is not even comparable.

@JenMac Meh. Forgiven.

@hhusted I doubt the sweater was the "same exact style". The labels KMart stocks are often cheaper knockoffs of what you find in at the better labels, but the cut and materials are never as good.
