Empty storefronts in the city will now host events

We have discussed the city's empty retail spaces in many of our forum posts. Apparently now those vacant storefronts will host events which will be funded by Swing Space grants.

I love how the post calls the landlords concerned 'kind landlords' bet they are desperate landlords who are hoping to get some free publicity so that they can somehow catch the eye of a prospective tenant. Btw the vacant retail space in Union Square which was abandoned by the Virgin Mega Store last year will now host the discount designer store Nordstrom Rack which will open in May 2010.

It is interesting to note that when one store leaves, another store replaces it. I guess there are stores that are making a ton of cash and can afford the rents in the city.

@hhusted I remember reading a retail report some years ago which said that Nordstrom had been trying to enter NYC for years but had not been able to because of the high real estate prices but now it seems it has managed to get in but funnily not with its regular store but its outlet. Weird don't you think?

Swing Space has been around for more than a decade in various forms, actually. But it seems especially fitting for the current situation, and perhaps this means they can expand their activities.

@DBlack this seems like a win-win situation for all concerned then.

Strawberry Jam - they've got some surprisingly good stuff! They've got another branch on 86th St and Lex; they're inexpensive but nice.

@JenMac: When my girlfriend and I go to the Roosevelt Mall in Garden City, Long Island, we bypass Nordstrom. We go into Macy's. We go into Macy's just so we have access to the mall and food court.
