Not for Tourists?

Okay, so most of the people taking part in these forums aren't exactly tourists - but do any of you pick up any of the New York guides? Do people still read Not for Tourists after the invention of the iPhone? I had a roommate once who was always picking up the latest copy of Zagat or TimeOut (like the city guide, not the weekly)... What do you all rely on to look for new restaurants/ cultural activities?

(I'm guessing the answer has something to do with the internet, but specifics would be great!)

I'm partial to Time Out NY lately and like to have the hard copy on the coffee table to riffle through. It gives me a broad overview. We've had a few posts about good insider websites, like Daily Candy, etc. Let me see if I can pull up the list...

@JenMac is the newest edition of that book fairly recent?

@Uraniumfish I've always been a fan of TimeOut... their city guides can be on the expensive side, but I love how colorful and detailed they are. Any insider website lists would be great!

I tend to use wikitravel when looking for things to do both when I travel or when I come home to NYC - it's written by locals in given places (I assume), and has a sort of grassroots feel - I never buy traditional guidebooks! I feel rather that the internet has made traditional guidebooks somewhat irrelevant.

I depend on the my girlfriend to know things if I don't know them myself. I've been here for about 5 years. But my girlfriend has been living in the city for nearly 25 years. She was born in the Bronx, grew up on Long Island, and moved to the city when she was 21.

She knows everything about this city, like she knows the back of her hand.

There's only 1 edition and it was written about 4 years ago (give or take). It's new enough that Freemans and Vong are in it. But, it's definitely more than 2 years old. Still a great great book.

I use the internet extensively and use guides like metromix.com,nymag.com and DailyCandy though the husband seems to rely on his Zagat for restaurant choices.

Each person has his or her individual choice of ways to look up stuff in NYC. Whatever works.
