Secret Tunnel Tours in Brooklyn

I'm totally fascinated by these old tunnels under Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, and it looks like there's still places left in the next tour!

Somebody told me the tunnels were used during WW1 as ammunitions storage before they shipped it across the Atlantic, but I don't know if that's just a legend. In any case, I aim to find out!

@ajadedidealist Thanks for this. I wish the kid were around a lot more often than she is. One of my biggest regrets is that she lives so far away, though I'm active in making sure she becomes a smart, cool New Yorker anyway.

@everybody: I was just thinking (yeah, steam is coming out of my head). I saw a documentary about two years ago on NYC, and according to the program, right beneath us are lost pirate ships that got buried underground. When excavators came here to put in the ground, they were told not to touch anything down too deep. They had no time or money to bring it up. So, right under your home could be a treasure worth billions of dollars. You never know what can be buried underground.

uptowngirl: Ha ha. You will be digging for a long time. Do you know how much cement, dirt, and rock were laid down to make way for the streets, roads, and buildings, not to mention the subway tunnels. I was told if someone were to go into a subway tunnel and dig down into the ground, they would find treasure. I'm not sure what subway line was being spoken about. Could have been the 6 train. But you know what? I think there are plenty of good things underground no matter where you are. Let's grab a pick, shovel, and scooper, and begin digging. Remember, finders keepers, losers weepers.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Most of Manhattan's a natural swamp and I doubt much got preserved down there.

Heh, I just saw the Godfather for the first time the other day. And I imagine I can see it. But I'm not so keen on digging into sewers, etc...

@Uraniumfish: Hey, you got a point. With all the mafia wars going on back in the late 1800's, and early 1900's, no telling what is underground. And I do agree that if you began digging, especially in lower Manhattan, you would find loose soil and water, or just plain swamp land.
