Spas for $50 or less
Time Out New York just came out with this excellent feature article, "Spas for $50 or less."
http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/spas-sport/82354/cheap-massages-and-spa-services-in-new-york-city
I would say this goes well under many of our other threads, including romantic dates and wintertime things to do. I love the recession! It means I can afford the Great Jones Spa. Get yourself beaten with oak leaves! It's less than $50!

Thanks Uraniumfish maybe I will gift the husband After Hours body massage at the Why Not Men’s Spa.. he seems to relish a massage unlike me who cant sit still long enough.. the weirdest treatment however seems to be the baby's bottom treatment for a blemish free butt!!! I think NYers generally have a penchant for their nether regions my regular waxing lady is quite fanatical and meticulous in her approach .. if you catch my drift..

I was walking down 3rd Avenue near my block this morning, and I saw a sign that another spa was coming to NYC, and right on that block. It seems despite the slow economy, spas are making out like bandits. Any reason why?

It's certainly cheaper than a night out on the town, and you don't feel hung over the next day. In fact, you feel quite the opposite. I am headed to the Russian Sauna next week. I have a Date, and will report back on the quality of their facilities. I really want someone to beat me with sticks while sitting in intense heat. Have I mentioned how tired I am of this winter?

@Uraniumfish I have actually heard some good things about it from some Russian friends who have in fact invited us for a borscht dinner on Saturday night. Can't quite remember exactly what their comments were but I hope you have a fun time at the baths and are all warm and toasty at the end of your date.:)

This isn't a spa but I feel that it's still appropriate to mention that the Acupuncture School on Broadway and 22nd does a full session of acupuncture for 44 bucks (23 if you're a student). Jennifer O'Brien is amazing. It seriously changed my life. And, it's so cheap!

I go for all sorts of stuff -- I quit smoking from acupuncture, it helps with anxiety, insomnia . . you name it. It doesn't hurt at all. It just feels kind of weird. There's a definite surge of energy that shoots across your body when the acupuncturist hits a particularly clogged spot. The first time I did it, I felt really drained and kind of sick after. I guess that was because my body was dealing with a lot of toxins that were being released. After that, I've always felt pretty great. I quit smoking after two sessions.

My gym has a sauna and steam room and I use it frequently after I work out. In fact, it's become part of my standard workout routine to sit in there a few minutes. @Uraniumfish I'd like to hear how you found the sauna experience and if you think it's worth the money to go there over and above what you might get from having a sauna included in a regular gym membership.

@BroadwayBK: The only thing that can really cure rotten boy syndrome is by focusing on what type of guy you want, and only go for that type of guy. You attract bad guys because maybe deep down inside you associate bad guys with being accepted. I'm not saying this is true. Just talking like a therapist. Actually, if you really want to date a great guy, you have to visualize yourself with one, and only look for that type of man.
Good luck in finding that good guy.

So I did some checking up on this Chill Wellness deal and the only thing you can really get without spending more than $110 is some waxing or one massage, since it's not valid for botox or laser hair removal. So worth it if you're in need of some waxing, but otherwise....

@BroadwayBK: I studied human behavior and the human mind. I know how it works. The problem is that people don't realize it because they are in denial about it, or they just don't know it. I'm not saying you are attracted to bad guys. But if you focus your attention on bad guys, you will meet them. Focus on good guys and you will begin meeting that type. I know this works because I have seen it done.
Good luck in finding that good person.

I saw a tanning salon on 3rd Ave between 27th and 28th St advertise waxing. I didn't stop to check the price. I don't even remember the name of the tanning salon, but if anyone is in the area, may be able to find it. The salon is next door to Duane Reade.

So, back to the Russian Sauna and the best Date ever (coming soon, less than a week away): I was reading on the website that on coed days men are required to wear shorts. What the heck? Does that mean only women are allowed to be stark naked? Is there some fear that poor defenseless women might be traumatized by the sight of the male member?

@hhusted Yeah, still pretty sure you know nothing of my personal situation or my so-called attraction to "bad guys." I was being mostly facetious with my postings and I doubt that anyone who couldn't pick up on that can really give me too much personal advice. Maybe I could use a therapist, but who couldn't? Please let's just drop it because you are making me rather uncomfortable.
@uptowngirl I hear J Sisters International is the place go go for waxing, but I have never actually ventured into professional waxing, really. Seems like the average cost of a bikini wax around these parts is about $50 and $100 for a full leg wax. That Chill Wellness place had a price for both leg and bikini that I think was around $100.
@Uraniumfish I'm sure there is a huge insurance liability when it comes to coed saunas. The coed sauna at my university required that everyone be clothed at all times, and that meant more than just a towel. It's strange that women don't have to wear anything, though?

Thanks for that, Uraniumfish! So it sounds like what you're saying is the heat of the Russian Sauna is much hotter than the standard New York saunas? That's interesting. I've never though about the heat of the sauna at my gym, but I guess it would fall in the category of wussy "spic and span" polished places. Hmm. I wonder how many high heat saunas there are in NY? A lot? A few? There's a big sauna in Queens I've been wanting to try, which would probably do the high heat...

I definitely need a place to FEEL clean, but I don't like spas/saunas that get too new age-y with the music or the decor, or that try way way too hard to provide that "total relaxation" experience. You guys must know which kind I mean? I guess I'm just used to the matter-of-fact style of European saunas, where no one's trying too hard to be anything in particular and they just make sure to mop up the place well and regularly. That's all I need.

@ajadedidealist I figured out a cure for dusty laptop screens, get your hands on an eyeglass cleaning spray , squirt some on the screen and then wipe it off with one of those microfiber cleaning pads which are now available everywhere( even at Duane Reade) To protect my keyboard from crumbs and the like I also use a keyboard cover which I ordered online from one of those online tech accessory retailers.

I actually just learned how to clean the keyboard on my laptop when one of my keys started sticking - you just pop those suckers off, dust a little, and when I popped the troubled key back on it was fine. It would be a pain, though, to clean the entire keyboard. I wonder if there is a place you can take your laptop to get it detailed? Ha.

@uptowngirl Indeed. The spa scene is one of those luxury perks that shrinks drastically when there's an downturn in the economy, and flowers right up the minute people have cash to burn. I bet a lot of the ritzy spas are feelings the crunch. I mean, people woudl be reluctant to give up going to their gym, but might manage to live without a manicure every single week.
