Student lost an eye
What do you guys think of the art student who lost an eye in a protest over the summer? It's the cover story in the Village Voice:

Oh, gross! I have a huge thing about eyes - that scene from Kill Bill 2 still gives me the shivers! (That said, she seems to be a very brave and talented young woman, who is facing her tragedy with courage and moving on with her life)

She does have a lot of mojo for someone who has been scarred for life relatively recently. Quite a way to adjust and carry on...

Yeah - that girl is really awesome! I don't think I can express in words just how awesome I think she is. If only everyone had such an outlook on life...

On that note, I'd like to ask ho wyou all feel about the controversial "Time" cover with the Afghan woman with a missing nose? I thought it was a powerful and importnt image, even if I disagreed with elements of the accompanying article. What did you all think? Too much? Too difficult?

It's sad to hear someone has to lose a body part like that but I do admire her spirit and her enthusiasm. I hope she never gives up her dream.

@ajadedidealist @DBlack Agreed on the Time cover image front. It may be a difficult image, but it's one of those things that shouldn't be ignored.

It's striking - I think it will be one of the iconic images of this decade - and kudos to Time for publishing them!

On the Time cover: my first thoughts were that they selected a girl who was very pretty before she was mutilated - I wonder if she would have been photographed otherwise?

In a way, it's the contrast between her beauty and her disfigurement that make the image so powerful and lasting - it's certainly haunted me since I saw it. Not sure I agree with the political conclusions of the article, but they do make a very strong case...

I do agree she is pretty. But you know what. If it weren't for the stuff in the glass frame, you would not see anything wrong with her. She does have spirit.
