Tipping your movers

So today I had the packers and movers in all day who worked really fast to get all my stuff packed for my relocation.They were really amazing and they will be in tomorrow as well to do all the moving. Since it is the first that I am doing this I was wondering what is the tipping protocol for movers? many of you have moved around a bit so what do you suggest is a fair tip? Please let me know asap as I will have to do the needful tomorrow itself.

@uptowngirl I know just about everyone gets tipped in NYC, but I really am at a loss on this one and would be curious to know what you end up doing.

Regardless of the amount you decide on, I think it's good karma to tip each person on his own, lest the lead guy kinda keeps too much of the tip for himself and the underlings don't get paid equally for their work.

That's a good point, @uraniumfish. And it's always good to forge relationships with companies. My mother used one company to move from Rome to NYC in 2006 and was able to use the same company to move to Tbilisi last week - same guys and all! They've gotten used to her furniture now - so inventorying was easy, and she felt really that she could trust them because they'd had such a good working relationship in the past. So you never know.

When I moved to NYC, I tipped the guys 50 buck a piece. I have a fair amount of furniture and I moved onto the third floor with stairs. They seemed pretty happy with that.

@Everyone we had four guys who each took a room and worked very fast and were quite satisfied with the $50 a piece tip that we gave them.Now I have to wait for the stuff to get here so I can unpack it.

@Uptowngirl: I gave my movers 20% of the total bill. I believe that is reasonable.

@hhusted I didnt have to pay for the packing etc so I had to only really worry about tipping the guys.

Just curious - how much do you guys tip your doormen? Do you do it annually (e.g., at Christmas) or just per small favor...

@ajadedidealist we tip both for small favors and also give them a substantially big tip for the holidays. I love my building doormen, they look out for me and when my husband was away for nearly a month , it was amusing to see how paternal they all got as they kept track of my comings and goings. Some people may find this intrusive but I found it very amusing.

The last time I moved a friend who owns a van did it. He I paid $50 an hour, and didn't tip, which I considered fair since it's not exactly like those wages were going on books somewhere.

Has anyone ever used one of those man with a van dudes that are always leaving flyers in every bar? I wouldn't do it personally, but I'm just wondering if anyone is perhaps braver or more confident in people than I am.
