"Very Commercial and Very Busy Area"

Some sections of W. 74th Street has apartments for residents. But many blocks have commercial establishments. Also, some blocks are decent to walk, while other blocks are not that great. I think it is up to the beholder to decide what he likes and doesn't like about the place.

Plus, when I approach people along the way, they snubbed me and kept on going. To me, the place is too busy, but that is the way I see it.
Pros
  • The largest shopping district on the Upper East Side
Cons
  • Crowded
  • Too many cars around

"Great Neighborhood to Live In"

W. 74th street has a lot going on for being here. You will find a lot to do. There are restaurants right around the corner. There are also stores nearby. The street has also been well kept so you don't mind a leisurely stroll once in a while.

You can take the subway or the bus to or near 74th Street and walk the rest of the way, depending on where you are going.

"Shopping and Convenience"

The one thing about this area is it used to be called New Amsterdam before NYC became New York. Now the street is simply Amsterdam Ave. This is basically a place where you can find a lot of old stuff. Someone told me one time that if you are looking for vintage stuff, this is the place to go. When you go to Amsterdam Ave, don't forget to stop by and check out Allan & Suzi. You'll know why when you stop there. You'll probably see a huge crowd of people looking in through the window display. it seems to captivate large audiences.
Pros

  • Get plenty of exercise walking around
  • Mixed bag

"Quiet and Clean"

This is a wonderful neighborhood in New York's Upper West Side. 74th ends at Riverside Dr. which is a beautiful place to take a walk. On the other side of 74th you can end up in Central Park West. The roads are not usually too busy until you get closer to Broadway and Amsterdam. The Fairway Market is conveniently close by and banks are relatively easy to get to. There are restaurants all along Broadway or Amsterdam, whichever direction you wish to travel.

"Central Park is Right Around the Corner"

This is the ultimate location if you are a fan of Central Park. With Broadway, Amsterdam, and Central Park located in the vicinity, you are never short of an opportunity to catch a show or eat at a five star restaurant. A short walk to the Hayden Planetarium and American Museum of Natural History will give you an enjoyable Saturday. To end a perfect day, go to Cafe Lalo a few blocks away and order one of their scrumptious desserts.

"Art dealer, typical New York food stops"

The art dealer Art Liquid is located here – they acquire art from artists at all stages of their career (including post-mortem), so if you’re looking to shovel away a few paintings check it out. There are also the staples you can find on just about any New York street here – the pizzeria, the bakery, etc.

"Great socializing for middle aged and up"

Since this is a main drag through the top hat of Manhattan, there are plenty of things to do for both residents and tourists. I’d recommend checking out Calle Ocho – especially if you live in New York and miss Miami terribly. Besides having mojitos that are actually made correctly (apparently it’s not as easy as you’d think), this place has a great atmosphere.

"Vintage clothes shopping at its best"

New Amsterdam is the old name for New York and Amsterdam is a street to go to if you wants the very best in old clothes. New York City has a great array of vintage clothing shops but one of the best is easily Allan & Suzi’s where the window display alone has people coming for miles to see what is happening.

"Offers a little bit of everything."

Columbus Avenue, like many of the longer roads, has a different vibe depending on where you land on it, but rest assured you will find something to love about each section. Each area has great dining options and numerous shopping adventures. Isabella's located on Columbus near West 77th street offers great outdoor dining during the summer months. Columbus Avenue has a number of eating options that offer outdoor dining during the warm months which is great for individuals who enjoy watching the city go by (i'm one of those people). It is crowded but never feels overly congested which is a nice medium. Overall it's a wonderful place to visit and reside.

"Diverse and lovely"

Columbus Avenue is an extremely diverse road, with what seems like a new personality every block. One block might be a center for overlypriced clothing and random items, while another might be a genuinely diverse neighborhood. Great places to eat line almost every block. It's a great street overall, one of the few good, diverse streets in the city.

"A quiet, dog-friendly street to live on the upper west side with a private school preschool on the block"

West 74th Street is bookended by Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue. There's great clothes shopping on Columbus, four blocks away from the best coffee shop on the upper west side, The Coffee Bean. Aside from tasty thin crust pizza around the corner on Amsterdam and the bakery Crumbs, there's no real hip restaurants. Please tell me if you feel otherwise.
